Our family in Kazakhstan know how precious it is to own a Bible of their own. To be found secretly passing a Bible into the hands of another - to be discovered holding your breath as you slip it, hidden, under your clothes - these exchanges can have serious consequences for our Kazakhstan brothers and sisters.
Walk into any Christian bookstore in the United States and you will see hundreds of Bibles lining the shelves. Not only are they offered in a variety of translations, colours and materials, but we also have a choice of study Bibles, journaling Bibles and devotional Bibles. No-one watches us as we shop. No one threathens the shop owner. It is perfectly legal to sell a Bible and perfectly legal for us to purchase one.
In many areas of the world, however, the Bible is viewed as dangerous propaganda - a threat to a political regime or the majority religion in that nation. In Kazakhstan, for instance, dozens of people have been fined in recent years just for selling Bibles, children's Bibles, and other Christian material. And the fines are not just a slap on the wrist. Often, they amount to the equivalent of three weeks' wages for the average person. What is your income for three weeks?
Churches in Kazakhstan must register with the government. Those that refuse are monitored under restrictive religion laws. When political unrest increased in January, so did pressure against Christians. We must pray for our brothers and sisters!
For many Kazakhstan believers, seeing fellow Christians caught and fined, or churches under watch, can have a chilling effect. Many are discouraged, weary.....and the fines create a huge financial burden.
God, we pray that the church in Kazakhstan would not grow weary and loose heart. Encourage and strengthen them so their faith will not be shaken. Bring change to Kazakhstan so that those who love You can freely share their faith and their Bibles with those who need to hear. We pray that You would provide for the needs of those who have been fined. Lift their financial burden and give them hope amid these challenging circumstances.
Thanks so much for praying, taken from Open Doors USA text alert.
