Priyantha Diyawadanage, a 48 year old Sri Lankan was just doing his job. The factory manager, husband and father of two children was asked to clean an area of the plant where he worked in Pakistan. And so, as a first step, he took posters off the wall.
He didn't realize the impact of his simple act - the posters included the name of the Muslim prophet Muhammad.
Suddenly, rumours lit a fuse of fanaticism, as word went out that Priyantha had committed blasphemy. Nobody stopped to ask what had actually happened. No one listened when a co-worker tried to intervene and explain. Instead, a mob of 800 screaming people beat Priyantha to death and set his body on fire.
Under Pakistan's blasphemy law, authorites can punish anyone with fines, imprisonment, even death, for insulting Islam. Too many times, hardline Muslim mobs take the law into their own hands.
Pakistan leader Imran Khan described the incident as a "day of shame" for his country. Police have arrested 124 culprits and are searching for more.
Sadly, this isn't the first incident of Christians put to death by fanatical mobs in Pakistan and it likely won't be the last.
One local partner commented, "The world has been shaken by this news......This incident may eventually force Pakistan legislators and authorities to recognize the danger of the blasphemy law and how tragic its impact is."
Please pray for safety and comfort for Priyantha's family as they mourn his senseless death.
Lift up Christians all over Pakistan who may be traumatized by this tragedy, and who daily are at risk of accusations and attack due to the blasphemy law.
Pray the Pakistani government will bring justice in this incident and abolish blasphemy laws.
Thanks so much for praying God bless. Taken from Open Doors USA text alert.
