Open Doors field operators are concerned over a possible new law the Nigerian Senate is trying to pass. As so many of our Nigerian family members are undergoing severe persecution, this law may have a devastating effect on many of the families we care for.
Imagine the word reaches you - your beloved daughter has been kidnapped by Boko Haram, and they are demanding a ransom, or you will never see her again. In Nigeria this happens all too frequently.
But paying a ransom for your daughter could soon have serious consequences. The new bill introduced into the Nigerian Senate states that you could face a jail term of at least 15 years for paying a ransom to free your daughter! It also makes abduction punishable by death in cases where victims die, but the perpetrators are rarely caught.
The aim of the bill is to 'discourage the rising spate of kidnappings and abduction for ransom in Nigeria, which is fast spreading across the country' according to Opeyemi Bamidele, the chair of the Senate's judiciary, human rights and legal committee.
"We cannot imagine the difficult position of families of those who have been held hostage," says the Open Doors direct for the work in Africa. "They are put in the indescribable position of trying everything to save their loved ones with limited resource or recourse. These families experience repeated trauma and are often treated like afterthoughts - in the midst of trauma, we must rally around them."
Open Doors has recommended that the government create a family liasison to assist families traumatized by abductions and help them explore all appropriate options for rescue. Meanwhile, the wider Body of Christ needs to lift this situation in prayer for those who don't know where to turn.
Please pray for release of all who remain in captivity and for abundant grace to their distressed family members.
Pray for the government to show urgency and accountability in addressing the matter.
Pray that the International community will continue to enjoy much wisdom in engaging the Nigerian government over this matter.
Thanks so much for praying, Elohim bless you. Taken from Open Doors USA text alert.
