It is hard to picture the situation in Nigeria becoming more grim, but recent reports show that our brothers and sisters face even larger threats than before. It's been reported that the various militant Islamic groups such as Boko Haram, Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), Fulani herdsmen bandits and violent gangs are joining forces and coordinating their attacks.
Between January 1 and March 31 this year, 1,884 people were killed in these attacks. 8.4 million Nigerians in the northeast region need humanitarian assistance, half of them facing food crisis, the UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has said.
Though the attacks don't always involve Christians, believers are a particularly sought-after target by the extremists. On April 19, at least 20 people were killed or injured in an attack by ISWAP on a market in Iware. In a statement posted on Telegram, the group said, "Soldiers of the caliphate in Central Nigeria had attacked 'a gathering of infidel Christians'
The Information Minister of Plateau State, Lai Mohammed, has called the new aliances 'a kind of unholy handshake between bandits and Boko Haram insurgents.'
Though our family of faith has shown incredible resilience, their patience with the government to solve this crisis is wearing thin. It is feared that reprisals against Muslims may begin as the situation is expected to escalate in the run-up to the 2023 election.
Pray for your family in Nigeria and the desperate lives they are leading right now.
Lord Jesus, we lift the believers to You and ask for Your calming spirit to prevent retaliation as they struggle with grief and helplessness. And we aso lift up those who are committing these attacks, begging you to send Your Spirit to turn their hearts from violence to trust in You. Only You can do that. Give government leaders divine solutions and guide their hands as they seek to end the violence.
Thanks so much for praying, Elohim bless you. Taken from Open Doors USA text alert.
