A common tactic in India to shut down a ministry or prevent evangelism is to bring a charge of 'forced conversion' by saying a new believer was bribed, coerced or threatened into changing his or her religion. Once the accusation is made, it is very difficult to be cleared from it.
And our Indian brothers and sisters are asking for prayer in the midst of this.
A new order in the state of Karnataka requires a survey of Christian churches, missionaries and their activities. One of the members of the legislature said - 'the main aim of the survey is to check forced religious conversion, which is rampant in some parts of Karnataka."
One government leader said: "The menace of forced conversion is so rampant that the perpetrators are even converting residences into churches and Bible societies." There have also been false accusations that poor people and families are being lured - with food and other help - and forced to convert.
The survey order has sparked vehement opposition from the Christian community. Churches, leaders, missionaries and believers are in jeopardy as they fear this regulation will only increase anti-Christian feelings and tension between religions in India.
Please pray with the churches, leaders, pastors and believers who are threatened and at risk.
Ask God to open the eyes of the Indian government to realize people want to convert to following Jesus, and they mean no harm or pose no threat by doing so.
Lift up believers who are worried about this situation, and persecution in India in general, and ask God to bring peace, comfort and courage to their hearts as they face it.
