In the Mexican state of Chiapas, it was time for the annual community religious festival. Everyone was excited. Everyone, except the Christian families who refused to participate because it didn't align with their evangelical beliefs. And that's when the town of Ponciano Arriaga turned on them with a vengeance.
Though the believers offered to pay a fine - amounting to $25 - for not taking part in the festival, officials instead turned turned off all essential services to the homes of Eleuterio, Jesus and Dorian. Then they gathered a mob to harass the families, forcing them to flee the village.
Home is suppossed to be a place of safety. Pray for these families who saw it become a place of targeted hatred. Ask God to help them find their home in Him, and peace in His presence.
The three families were part of a small Christian community within the town. The rest of the Christian families left behind were fined $450 because they refused to be part of the mob that attacked the three families or help turn off the water and electricity services.
Six months after being evicted, the three families are still petitioning to be allowed to return to collect their belongings, as they were driven out with nothing. Officials have not responded to the requests.
Pray with Eleuterio, Jesus and Dorian's families for a peaceful and speedy conclusion to this situation. Lift up the persecutors, and pray they have a change of heart both toward their former community members but also toward the Lord.
