We have reports that two villages on Kenya's northeast coast were attacked by what appears to be Islamic extremists who align themselves with terrorist group al-Shabab. In the two attacks, seven people were brutally killed, and a number of huts were torched and burned down.
The attacks carried cruel characteristics indicating an Islamic influence. This part of Kenya borders areas of Somalia where al-Shabbab is active. Often, militias cross the border to cause havoc in Kenya. However, criminal gangs active in the area could be responsible.
Villagers in Widhu and Hindi are traumatized, including parents who fear that militant gangs will attack their children's schools and kill or kidnap students. In this area of Kenya, Islamic militants sometimes attack schools, claiming that schools are based on Western anti-Islamic principles.
In the two local schools, zero children showed up for school on Monday. Reportedly, some teachers showed up, trying to convince parents it was safe to send their children to school. On Tuesday, 25 of 300 students turned up.
Kenya's government has imposed a dawn-to-dusk curfew in the volatile Lamu region.
Please pray for the families of the seven villagers killed in the attacks. Pray that God will draw them to Himself and that His church would reflect His compassion
Pray for traumatized villagers who live with the constant threat of attack.
PRay that the Kenyan government is able to track down the militants or criminals who are responsible for these heinous attacks, so that parents feel safe to send their children back to school.
Pray that the peace of God would counter Islamic hate that has troubled northeastern Kenya for many years.
Thanks so much for praying, God bless. Taken from Open Doors USA text alert.
