We often take for granted our right to free speech. The Indonesian constitution also allows for freedom of speech......unless the speech is considered blasphemous against religion, specifically Islam. Blasphemy is a criminal act and can be penalized by up to 5 years in prison.
Muhammad Kece came to believe in Jesus in 2014, and six years later he started a YouTube channel that talked about his faith in Jesus. This year, religious leaders in Indonesia demanded he be arrested because they felt his videos were provocative and insulting to his former faith.
On his first night in prison, Kece was persecuted by other inmates because of his comments on YouTube. They beat him and then, a few hours later, he was tortured by a former inspector general of the police who was in prison for bribery. Kece was left very bruised and with a black eye.
Though the former inspector general initially admitted his actions, he recanted and denied his own confession as the investigation continued. And Muhammad remains in prison, vulnerable to further attacks.
Please pray with Muhammad Kece as he endures a dark time for the sake of his Lord.
Pray for God's protection over Muhammad. His YouTube statements angered many, including those who are in prison with him.
Ask God to give Muhammad wisdom in how he reacts to this time of persecution, and that he will show strength in his faith and his body.
Pray Muhammad will be a light for Christ as he shares. Pray for his speech and actions to be tempered with God's love.
