We have some horrible news to share with you from the field today. Tragically, Pastor Yalam Shankar's body was found murdered beside his house in Anganpalli, India, last night, March 17. Pastor Shankar's name was on a list of about 30 believers. He found the list tacked to his door in January, with a warning that if any of the people on it converted anyone to Christianity, they would be killed.
Despite the threats, Pastor Shankar continued to minister. He used to say, "Even if I lose my life, I will not stop serving the Lord."
Many believers live under the threat of death every day. Pray for courage as they continue to serve God. Lift up the family of Pastor Yalam and pray for comfort as they grieve. Pray that their faith will not fail and that the death of the pastor would not deter them from their mission.
There had been a constant stream of threats by the Naxalites (a Maoist rebel group) against the pastor and other believers.
An Open Doors partner shared, "In previous years, so many pastors have been killed by the Naxalites. They are not necessarily against Christians but are instigated by the extremist people from local communities against Christians. The Naxalites depend on these people for politcal support."
Pray God will convict the hearts of these people who kill without realising what they are doing. Ask God to turn their hearts to Him and cause them to renouce this senseless violence.
Not only does Pastor Yalam leave a bereaved family, he leaves a community of Christians living in fear - many of whose names are on the same list his was. One of the favourite tactics of the enemy is to intimidate believers so they stop sharing the gospel. After reading about this incident, it's easy to see how that could happen.
Pray that God would protect and strengthen believers in this region. Pray they would lives as ones with hope and that they would turn from fear in the face of persecution.
Thanks so much for praying, Elohim bless you. Taken from Open Doors USA text alert.
