After a very difficult year for Christians in India, believers are breathing a sigh of relief when a long-awaited court hearing was finally scheduled for July 15. We invite you to pray with us this week as the hearing could ensure protection and prevent further violence against followers of Jesus.
To put this in perspective, 2021 was the 'most violent year' (on record) for our brothers and sisters in India according to the United Christian Forum, as reported by news site The Quint. There were 486 reported attacks on Christians - a 75% increase from 2020. And still, violence against believers continues to rise each month is 2022. In May alone, 57 cases of violence against Christians were reported in India. And despite these staggering numbers, government intervention has stalled....until now.
In May, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court refused an early hearing of a plea for protection, citing ther was 'no urgency.' Now, in a reversal, and while the Court is on summer break, a 'vacation bench' of the Court has put the hearing on the docket for July 15.
"What your saying is unfortunate, if it is happening every day, " said Justice Surva Kant., as quoted by LiveLaw, India's legal news site. Let's praise God for this change of heart!
In their application, church leaders (the petitioners) asked the Supreme Court for, among other considerations, the creation of a "Special Investigation Team to register criminal cases and prosecute groups responsible for attacking Christians", "to provide police protection to Christians who are under a threat of attack by violent mobs", and "to identify and prosecute political and social groups responsible for violence against Christians."
Let's stand with our Indian family this week as they wait for justice to prevail.
Father God, open the minds and hearts of judges to hear the evidence and move swiftly and decisively to bring more balance to India so that our brothers and sisters there can believe and worship without fear. Be very present in the hearing and let Your Holy Spirit rule.
Thank you so much for praying, Elohim bless you. Taken from Open Doors USA text alert.
