Friends, military rule has been declared in the eastern provinces of Ituri and North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on May 6, in an attempt to curb violence in the region. A statement by the presidental spokesman Kasongo Mwema Yamba notes that, under the state of seige, governors and provincial assemblies in North Kivu and Ituri provinces will be suspended for 30 days. In their place, the government will install military governors and police vice-governors with wide-ranging powers. The announcement of military rule follows the United States' decision to add the ADF to their list of Foreign Terror Organizations, referring to them as ISIS-DRC.
These provinces are plagued by endless violence, mostly at the hands of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). The ADF uses violent attacks and ambushes to strike at people in the DRC and Uganda. in the last several years, the ADF has also increased its ties to the Islamic State group.
The ADF controls vast areas in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, where most people are Christians. For many years, Open Doors sources have warned the ADF is working to uproot the local mostly Christian population and expand their foothold. After a recent country visit, an Open Doors field worker described the situation in the eastern provinces as a war zone. She shared that military personnel intermittently stopped her and her traveling companions, warning them of attacks in nearby villages and urging them to turn around.
Pray for the Lord's abundant grace to fall on all those affected by violence this year. Pray the Lord will comfort them and show Himself as a mighty help in trouble.
Pray military rule will be effective in stopping the ADF from further expanding and terroizing communities in the eastern provinces of the DRC.
Pray for the displaced, that their hope will not be based on their circumstances, but in our faithful Father.
Pray believers will take the Good News with them wherever they are and share it with those around them.
Pray for wisdom and courage for church leaders who serve a community of believers that is always on the look-out and often in flux as they are displaced by these attacks time and time again.
Thank you so much for praying for our worldwide persecuted church, like the Bible tells us too in Hebrews 13.3 and other verses. May Adonai reward you for your faithfulness in this life and the soon to come eternal life. All information and prayers from an Open Doors text alert.
