Mama Agathe is a 61 year old Christian from Central AFrican Republic. She and her husband, a 67 year old deacon in their church, were at home on the evening of July 4, 2021. Suddenly, three men arrived with guns, knives and machetes arrived. As they threatened her husband, they sexually assaulted Mama Agathe.
The next day they returned and repeated the attack.
"We don't know why they came or what they wanted, but they just kept coming," says a traumatized Mama Agathe. "I have no strength, I cannot fight them."
The couple walked out of the village with nothing but the clothes on their backs. "We took nothing, so as not to draw attention to the fact that we were leaving," Mama Agathe's husband said.
The couple decided to walk 28 miles to the nearest town, where they hoped to find safety. Along the way, a hospital vehicle stopped and picked them up. They were welcomed to the new town by local church members, who provided them with lodging, medicine and a farm to cultivate.
"Sexual violence in the Central African Republic is a well-known weapon of war that's often used to rebels, often including radical Muslims," explained an Open Doors field research expert for West Africa. "Such acts are often committed against Christians, often in the presence of their husbands, parents or other family members with the sole aim of traumatizing and subjugating them."
Though Mama Agathe and her husband are now safe, their journey to wholeness is only beginning. Pray with them as they heal.
Please pray for Mama Agathe to recover physically, psychologically and emotionally from her attack, and that God would comfort and help her and her husband to deal with the trauma.
Pray for continued encouragement for this couple and others who continue serving God even in the midst of such challenging circumstances.
Ask God to use this attack to draw Christians in the area together in compassion and prayer for one another.
Thanks so much for praying, God bless. From an Open Doors USA text alert. To find out how to sign up for text alerts and emails to know when to pray please visit their website. They also have a UK and Ireland website and several other countries as well.
