We have some tragic news from North-Eastern Nigeria today. On May 12, Deborah Samuel Yakubu, a young student at Shehu Shagari College of Education, was killed in a violent attack. While our college years are a time when opinions should be valued, it was Deborah's opinion that resulted in her death.
The exact wording of her post on a school Whatsapp group is not clear (witnesses refuse to repeat it) but sources say, Deborah objected to Islamic information posted on a group created to address academic matters. Although it has not been confirmed, sources told Open Doors that she also commented, "Jesus Christ is the greatest. He helped me pass my exams."
Realizing the danger, officials immediately evacuated Deborah, but a group of male Muslim students took her by force. They proceeded to hit and stone her until she was unconscious, and then set her body on fire. The murder was repeatedly caught on video.
The attack caused severe unrest, and the college closed immediately, with all students directed to leave the campus, according to a press release circulating online. Two people have been arrested in connection with the killing. Riots and protests have erupted in response.
Sokoto is one of Nigeria's 12 sharia-governed states. Even so, the Sultanete Council of Sokoto has condemned the incident and urged swift justice for the perpetrators. Christians in Sokoto are in mourning for Deborah. Her mother collapsed on hearing the news and is in the hospital.
Jo Newhouse, spokesperson for Open Doors' operational work in Sub Saharan Africa commented, "This is another tragic day for Northern Nigeria's Christians. We join Deborah's family and the wider Christian community in mourning her death. We condemn in the strongest terms possible this vicious act and call on authorities to take swift action to identify the perpetrators and bring them to book."
Please join us as we pray with Deborah's family and the other believers in Nigeria over this tragedy.
Father God, bring Deborah's parents comfort during this time of grieving. We ask You for a blanket of peace in the region, that you would calm the tensions and riots that are the result of this incident. Give Christian leaders and pastors wisdom as they navigate how to address this violent act.
Thanks so much for praying. Elohim bless you. Taken from Open Doors USA text alert.
