Converts can be disowned by their families and forced to divorce their spouse and leave the family home. Married Christian converts also may loose custody of their children.
Some local churches cannot be registered as churches; they must register as companies, organizations or family centers. Therefore, they are treated as secular business entities and are required to annually submit their financial and operational reports to the government.
The full implemtation of Shariah law in 2019 has affected every area of society in Brunei, and raised international concern. Thus far, though, it seems to generally not have been implemented against Christians.
Even though overt violence remains a remote risk for most followers of Jesus, many feel intense discrimination and abuse. The many Islamic laws in the country have been squeezing the church for decades.
Open Doors urges prayer support for believers in Brunei and for the local churches, as they experience mounting pressure from the government.
Please pray for church leaders who greatly need Biblical training, particulary in dealing with growing religious restrictions.
Please pray for God to open the doors of this country so that many will come to faith in Christ. Only He can create such a miracle in a nation where laws are in place to prevent anyone from reaching out with the message of salvation.
Ask God to counteract the opposition in Brunei. Pray God will strengthen the church there.
