Our team in Bangladesh is asking for urgent prayer for Shajahan, a believer from western Bangladesh, who is in danger of being excommunicated from his village.
Shajahan left Islam to follow Jesus 10 years ago. Since then, he's received ongoing death threats and pressure to reject Christianity and return to his Muslim faith. Most of the pressure comes from his neighbours and relatives, who also threaten him for leading his wife, children and grandchildren to Christ.
Recently, the persecution intensified when leaders from the local mosque asked Shajahan to contribute money, but he refused.
"I cannot partake and contribute money for the purpose of Muslim religious activity," Shajahan told them.
The muslim leaders mocked Shajahan and ridiculed him, but he remained silent. This silence made them even more angry. In response, the leaders officially shunned Shajahan from the village.
In Shajahan's region, being shunned is a disgraceful and painful public punishment.
This means Shajahan can't go to the fields to work or go to the market to buy and sell goods. He's not even allowed to visit anyone in the village - and noone in the village is permitted to see him.
As you can imagine its an agonising experience.
Then on Wednesday, May 26, a group of muslims went to Shajahan home and tried to force him to renounce his faith in Jesus Christ and return to Islam. They told him that if he refused, they would completely excommunicate him
"They said they would do anything and everything to stop me from practising my faith and make it impossible for me and my family to live in the village," Shajahan told our partners. "They said my family would not survive him, and we'll have no choice but to flee from our home and our property."
"I'm afraid of what they might do to my family," Shajahan adds.
The shunning and the isolation has taken it's toll on the whole family - and your prayers are needed.
Pray for the physical safety of Shajahan's family. Ask God to stand with them and give them the words to say and actions to take that demonstrate Christ in their hearts.
Pray the family will stand strong during this persecution and the ongoing pressure from their neighbours and relatives.
Ask God to soften the hearts of the persecutors and allow Shajahan and his family to live in peace within their village. Also, please ask God to provide more freedom for Christians across Bangladesh.
Prayer from a text alert from Open Doors USA. Thanks so much for praying God bless.
