We have an urgent request for prayer from our family in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Last Saturday afternoon in a local church, attackers shot and killed at least 10 Christians and wounded 8 others.
Our field told Open Doors that attendees had come from different areas, most likely to attend evangelism training. The attack took place in Kakonyangi village, near Bunia in the DRC's troubled Ituri province.
Hearing the gunshots, villagers fled the area.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, members of an ethno-political rebel group are suspected to be behind it. Though the group isn't known to have an open agenda against Christians or the church, they have been responsible for several attacks that have affected Christians in the area. Generally, armed groups with ethnic undertones like this one often blame churches and Christians for obstructing their projects through their prayers.
It is difficult to describe just how violent the DRC, especially in the east, is for Christians. The very fact that people still follow Jesus in this region is evidence of God's Hand. DRC believer Antonisha Kambale recently shared how she is praying: "Our prayer request is for God to help Christians not to compromise their faith, to save their lives."
Please pray with Antonisha and other believers in the DRC, especially the eastern regions:
Pray for those who have lost loved ones in this attack. Ask God to walk with them as they grieve.
Pray for healing and quick recovery for the eight believers who were wounded.
Pray for strength, resillience and courage for the believers to return to the area and continue to build the church.
Pray for wisdom and conviction for the DRC government as leaders seek sustainable ways to bring peace in the country, especially the eastern part.
Thanks so much for praying, Elohim bless you. Taken from Open Doors USA text alert. To sign up for text alerts, get a prayer diary or other way to support please visit their website. It is a international charity.
