God's idea for humans is that they live as humans in a glorified body. We often think (mostly because of modern evangelism) that the believer's end goal is heaven. We have 2 Question tests like "Do you know if you will go to heaven if you die?" Yes or No? Or, "If you were to die and stand before God, why would He let you into heaven?" Now where these are excellent things to ask, they tend to cause believers to end there as a goal and forget how Jesus came to earth to not just die for our sins so we can go to heaven, but to defeat death, so we can attain to the resurrection from the dead.

  • The final goal of man is to live as a man, like Jesus, the visible image of the invisible God (Col 1).

  • Man was created with this goal in mind, to actually act like God (not be God, but to "bear His image" as a son [Genesis Chapters 1-5])

  • We were to eat of the tree of life as a human and not intended to die (which is why it is natural to grieve the loss of even a believer -- though we do not grieve as others who have no hope, since to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and "This s the will of my father, that of all God gave Jesus He would loose nothing, but raise it up on the last day" [John 6])....

So the believer's spirit goes to be with the Lord in Heaven and the believer's body rests, or "sleeps in it's grave as in a bed" until the resurrection at the last trumpet at the coming of the Lord (even though it be but dust -- we started as dust, lived, return to dust, and from dust will be re-animated). Christ will surely come with both all his angels and the spirits of righteous men made perfect (Matt 25:31, 1 Thes 3:13 2 Thes 1:7, Jude 1:14, Heb 12:23). At that time there will be a lot of changes, 1 Cor 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed). I think this is while Luke says of Stephen that after being stoned, he fell asleep:

The Stoning of Stephen

โ€ฆ59While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, โ€œLord Jesus, receive my spirit.โ€ 60 Falling on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, โ€œLord, do not hold this sin against them.โ€ And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

So post resurrection of Christ, The Holy Spirit speaking through Stephen and Luke (the human instrument used to write Acts) confirms The Spirit's teaching through Paul, that the believer's spirit immediately goes to be with Jesus, yet it is not wrong to say the body sleeps. It is wrong to say the "soul sleeps" -- that is more a Greek idea -- but we were not meant to be disembodied spirits (just to be spirits in heaven). That would confound all Jesus' teachings on the resurrection and His raising of Lazarus the Brother of Mary and Martha to confirm He is the resurrection and even if the physical body dies, THAT TOO shall be raised (see also Revelation when it talks of those who will be raised from the deep & etc -- https://www.studylight.org/commentary/revelation/20-13.html -- Jesus is the 2nd man and Last Adam, 1 Cor says, so He actually, since the resurrection, "ate of the Tree of life" so to speak, " or Has life in Himself" (John 5:26) and is the "firstfruits" of all who have been converted, i.e. -- since He is raised all who belong to him will be also, we will follow the leader and be raised and conformed to His image God's original intention -- for Man was not to eat of the forbidden produce, but was to eat the Tree of Life and live forever -- not just as a spirit but as a human being.

The big thing to remember to add here is the resurrection of the physical body, some to honor and some to dishonor. The next step is the Millennium and then The New Heavens and the New Earth, but for know, this should add some clarity on The Resurrection of the Physical Body and confirm that there is a brief period of time (in light of eternity) where the spirits of the righteous "go to heaven when they die" post resurrection of Jesus and pre-2nd Coming. In this instance it is perfectly correct to inquire about the state of an unbeliever's soul -- where it will go, or better, where he or she "thinks" it will go -- and most importantly -- on what grounds are they resting on his assumption -- on good works, on some vain philosophy, on some vain religion whose founder has not attained to he resurrection of the dead -- or on he finished work of Christ on the cross and even equally important -- if His prophecies about having he poser to raise Himself back up from the dead because He was and is God came true -- all of this which results in a different life (repentance from what the Bible calls sin).

Our goal, therefore, and Paul's aim is expressed lucidly in Philippians 3:10, "I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death, 11 so that I may somehow attain to the resurrection from the dead.

This is spelled out very well in classical theology below with scripture references as footnotes:

Chapter XXXII

Of the State of Men after Death, and of the Resurrection of the Dead

I. The bodies of men, after death, return to dust, and see corruption:[1] but their souls, which neither die nor sleep, having an immortal subsistence, immediately return to God who gave them:[2] the souls of the righteous, being then made perfect in holiness, are received into the highest heavens, where they behold the face of God, in light and glory, waiting for the full redemption of their bodies.[3] And the souls of the wicked are cast into hell, where they remain in torments and utter darkness, reserved to the judgment of the great day.[4] Beside these two places, for souls separated from their bodies, the Scripture acknowledges none.

II. At the last day, such as are found alive shall not die, but be changed:[5] and all the dead shall be raised up, with the selfsame bodies, and none other (although with different qualities), which shall be united again to their souls forever.[6]

III. The bodies of the unjust shall, by the power of Christ, be raised to dishonor: the bodies of the just, by His Spirit, unto honor; and be made conformable to His own glorious body.[7]

[1] GEN 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. ACT 13:36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption.

[2] LUK 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise. ECC 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

[3] HEB 12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect. 2CO 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord. 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. PHI 1:23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better. ACT 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. EPH 4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.

[4] LUK 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ACT 1:25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. JUD 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 1PE 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison.

[5] 1TH 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 1CO 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

[6] JOB 19:26 And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: 27 Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me. 1CO 15:42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

[7] ACT 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust. JOH 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. 1CO 15:43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. PHI 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

Daniel 12:13 "But as for you, go your way to the end; then you will enter into rest and rise again for your allotted portion at the end of the age."
