Let us begin by acknowledging that persecution and rejection are not new to followers of Christ. Jesus Himself warned us, For the servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you John 15:20(WEB). It is by the name of Jesus that we are saved, but He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Matthew 16:15-16(WEB). Remember that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12(WEB).
When non-Christians persecute us or reject the Gospel, we should first remember Jesus' words, Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:11-12(WEB). It is important for us to remember that we are not wrestling with people but with principalities of darkness and we need to put on the full armor of God.
We should also pray for their salvation, as they are blinded by the god of this world. In whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them. 2 Corinthians 4:4(WEB). Pray that God will open their hearts to receive the truth of the Gospel.
Regarding how to respond to denial of the Gospel, Jesus gave us clear instructions, But whoever denies me before people, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 10:33(WEB). We are to preach the Gospel boldly, and if they do not receive it, we are to shake the dust off our feet and move on. Whoever doesn't receive you, nor hear your words as you go out of that house or that city, shake off the dust from your feet. Matthew 10:14(WEB).
As for dealing with violence due to rejection, Jesus told us to turn the other cheek and to love our enemies. But I tell you, do not resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. Matthew 5:39(WEB). You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you. Matthew 5:43-44(WEB).
Let us pray together.
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You in the name of Jesus, asking for wisdom and guidance in dealing with those who persecute us and reject the Gospel. Help us to remember that our battle is spiritual, and to put on the full armor of God. Give us the strength to boldly preach the Gospel, and to love our enemies even in the face of violence. Open the hearts of those who are blinded by the god of this world, and bring them to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Help us to stay hidden in Jesus when needed and stand tall when His word calls us to do so.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Lastly, let us not forget that God can turn what was meant for evil into good, just as He did with Joseph in the Old Testament. They meant it for evil, against us, but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save many people alive. Genesis 50:20(WEB).
