No Other Gods—Exodus 32

Exodus 20:3: Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

While we may not bow down to a golden calf, the temptation to idolatry is very much alive in our day and world! Do we serve the three Ps—personal freedom, political power, and prosperity—or the Lord?

Let Us Pray: God I ask You in Jesus’ name, “Search me, God, and know my heart...” (Psalm 139:23). God show me what I value too much and convict me of any idolatry. God train my heart to worship and desire You above all things, people, and places. Bless me to love what You love and hate what You hate. God please do the same for every member of my family, all my friends, each and every member of my church, and this prayer site. Thank You Jesus. Amen.

If we love Jesus with all our heart, then we should obey the Ten Commandments. All of them are for our own good and to live a life that pleases the Lord. Gods of our age are material possesions, lots of money in the bank, power and might in every aspect of our life. None of those things will enter heaven. We must seek first the kingdom of God and then Jesus will bless our life.

The Author of our Freedom.

Yes who do we serve? Is it personal freedom, political power, and prosperity—or is it the Lord?

Everyone has an anchor or an idol. Unfortunately some uses selfish personal freedom, power, luxury, politics without anchoring themselves to Jesus.

One of my favourite verses...

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matthews 6:33

Emphasis on the word first.

Billy Graham said:
"But anything can become an “idol” to us—that is, something we put in place of God. Some people, for example, make material success and the pursuit of money their goal in life—and they worship them with just as much devotion as someone might an idol made of stone. Others make beauty or prestige their goal—and these become “idols” because they put them first in their lives. Still others pursue entertainment or sexual thrills or drugs or alcohol—and these become their “idols.”

Freedom without Jesus is self-serving and we can say the same for political power and prosperity.

However freedom anchored in Jesus will indeed set you free.

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
—John 8:36

Christians are noted for their love for God first, their love for their neighbors, pursuing and promoting the kingdom of God and all of His righteousness. We don't corrupt this mandate with our selfish goals, but lead a life of Godly servitude. Jesus is the Author of our freedom.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’

As Christians we are forever in His service not our own selfish agendas.
