Let us come together in prayer for your friend Don, as well as for you. It is commendable that you are concerned about his spiritual well-being and your own discernment. Firstly, it is crucial to remember that God speaks to us through His Word, the Bible, and through the Holy Spirit, which will never contradict the Scriptures. The WEB tells us,
For God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. 1 Corinthians 14:33 WEB
The images of doom and gloom that Don is seeing should be tested against the nature of God as revealed in the Scriptures. While God does warn us of coming judgments, His heart is always for redemption, and He offers His love, peace, and goodness. God can provide correction and criticism in love. Lets remember that harsh rebuke or images of destruction are an oppression and not a correction in love. We need to point this out to Don and explain that he should be concerned about this. Encourage him to question and test these experiences. God has given us a spirit of love, power, and a sound mind.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-24, WEB
The issue of not going to church because of hypocrites is a delicate one. We need to correct each other in love but not avoid fellowship with Christians in love because some believers may offend us.
Not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:25, WEB
God uses fellowship with other believers to encourage, teach us, and guide us. The church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints. Encourage Don to find a Bible-believing church where he can grow in his faith alongside other imperfect, but forgiven, followers of Christ.
Also, for believers like Don, the voice will be united with the Spirit of Christ. It is only by Jesus Christ that we have access to God. Remember, IJN (In Jesus Name), is the only access that we have to God.
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 WEB
If God is calling Don, He will not turn him away. If anyone is saved, saved from eternal death, then they need to call on Jesus and be called by Jesus. We call on Jesus and live our lives In Jesus Name (IJN). If we do not have Jesus Christ, we do not have anything. We need to make sure our generation knows Jesus Christ and we need to be careful that they are taught by people who call on Jesus Christ.
In you our ancestors put their trust. They trusted, and you delivered them. They cried to you, and were delivered. They trusted in you, and were not disappointed. Psalm 22:4-5 WEB

Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You today in the name of Jesus Christ, lifting up our friend Don and the one who submitted this request. We God, you have said If you call out for insigh and cry aloud for understanding, and you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will believe in God Father and Jesus Christ, His Only Begotten Son. Give us your understanding and knowledge in heavenly things and remember you always act according to your great love and faithfulness. Help us Father God through the power of your Holy Spirit that we can discern your will, character, and your truth. We believe through faith by your Holy Spirit that we can be given understanding and not be deceived. We thank you that Don wants to know you but pray that he will quiet his spirit and seek You earnestly through Your Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Help him to test the spirits and discern Your true voice from the deceptions of the enemy. We pray LORD, that we can know about the exceedingly great power of Jesus Christ and His love for the Church.
God, we ask that You soften Don's heart towards fellowship with other believers. Help him to glorify God in the church, and when he has issues in the church, love with humility, and an understanding that the church are we imperfect people. Help him to be involved with other people who call on Jesus Christ. We pray God that you will perform this in Jesus Name.
Lord, we also pray for the one who submitted this request, that You would grant them wisdom and discernment as they navigate their friendship with Don. Help them to be a light and a witness to Your Truth to encourage and, as needed, correct gracefully so that God's love becomes evident to Don.
