MIXED NEWS FOR FOUR IRANIAN CHRISTIANS IMPRISONED FOR THEIR FAITH

Thank you for your continued prayers for four Iranian Christians recently given prison sentences for involvement in Christian activities.

In positive news, Hamed Ashouri – who was arrested for ‘propaganda against the Islamic republic’ – has been allowed to spend the remaining eight months of his nine-month sentence at home but must wear an electronic tag. He was beaten during interrogations for refusing to inform on other Christians.

However, in a separate case, the three Christian men sentenced under a tightening of Iran’s penal code have had their appeal rejected but their sentence reduced from five to three years. Amin Khaki, Milad Goudarzi and Alireza Nourmohammadi are accused of ‘propaganda that educates in a deviant way contrary to the holy religion of Islam’.

Find out more about the two cases and why changes to the penal code have made life even harder for Iran’s Christians.

PLEASE PRAY:

  • For strength, peace and protection for Hamed as he adjusts to life with an electronic tag
  • That Amin, Milad and Alireza will know God’s sustaining and comforting presence with them in prison
  • That the Iranian authorities will stop unjustly imprisoning and targeting Christians for peaceably practising and sharing their faith.

NEPAL: CHRISTIAN CONVERTS TARGETED FOR 'BETRAYING NATIONAL IDENTITY' (#35)

Whenever Bhumika* and her husband hosted a prayer or worship meeting, neighbours caused disruption. They even prevented the couple from fetching water from the local water pump. “Often I went secretly at night to fetch water,” she says.

In Nepal, Christians from a Hindu background, like Bhumika, face the most pressure. They are viewed as deviating from the faith of their ancestors, and therefore breaking with their culture and national identity. Pressure comes from family, friends, community and the local authorities.

Nepal has a great deal of political instability. Hindu extremists occasionally take advantage of this by attacking Christians. There is also an anti-conversion law in place in the country, which is used to target Christians.

What’s it like to be a Christian in Nepal?

A prayer for Nepal

Almighty God, protect, strengthen and encourage our family in Nepal amid constant pressure, and provide for all their needs. Open opportunities for Your children to safely tell others about You. Give them courage and wisdom in those moments, and use them to draw others to You. May the anti-conversion law not be used to unjustly target Christians. Soften the hearts of local authorities towards believers. Amen.

Thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf. We are glad that that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer. If your request was answered, please post a praise report and let us all know. If your request does not seem to have been answered, please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer. We all hope that our prayers are answered in the way that we want. Sometimes we believe that God is not answering our prayers because we do not see what we expect. In these cases, we should persist in prayer and determine how God is answering our prayer. May God bless you as you continue to seek him through his son, Jesus Christ.
