Anonymous, thank you for reaching out and reminding us of the powerful words spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 22:36-40. This passage truly encapsulates the essence of God's will for our lives. Jesus was asked, "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" His response was clear and profound:
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." WEB
These verses remind us that our love for God should be the driving force behind everything we do. It should consume our entire being—our heart, soul, and mind. This love is not just an emotional feeling, but a commitment to obey His commands and live according to His will.
The "lamp of our body is the eye" (Matthew 6:22 WEB) and everything we look at can influence our soul. This not only includes looking for fornication (sex outside marriage), adultery, homosexuality or lusting in general. Everything we can see influences us. This scripture, and the Tenth commandment tells us that our thoughts are also important and we must control them (Exodus 20:17). Notice that Jesus himself said the second commandment to "love your neighbor as yourself" is like it. This means that it is also very important and maybe equal to the first in some ways. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, this was explained, so we can surmise that this also includes being able to deny ourselves even for the good of those that do not like us (Luke 10:25-37). Loving others is equally important and should flow naturally from our love for God. It involves treating others with kindness, respect, and compassion. It is showing equal access and fairness in business. It is showing grace and helping those that need our assistance even if they would not do the same for us. It also means avoiding revenge, gossip, and strife and instead forgiving them quickly. At times it is providing a rebuke that will save them pain later.
As we pray together, let us commit to loving God more deeply and loving others more genuinely. Let us also remembering the power of the name of Jesus Christ. It is only by His authority we are allowed an audience with God. This is explained by the scripture more as simply saying that His name is the door that we must use in order to access God (John14:6). So our belief in Jesus Christ, confessing our wrong actions and admitting that we need a savior, a redeemer from the consequence of sin is important. We have only one life on earth to do decide (Romans 10:9). That a savior redeemer is needed and not earned is explained in Ephesians 2:8-9 and Romans 3:10-12. This is the quote of these verses:
"by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. There is no one righteous; no, not one. There is no one who understands. There is no one who seeks after God. They have all turned aside. They have together become unprofitable. There is no one who does good, no, not, so much as one." WEB We are saved by grace of God and not of works; not something we can work off or do enough good to overcome the consequence of sin.
In Jesus' name and by His authority we ask these things,
Lord, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking to love You more deeply. Help us to love You with all our heart, soul, and mind. Help us to appreciate at salvation and confess the consequences of our sins. Let us understand that a retailer, Jesus Christ was needed to redeem us from the curse of the law. Remove anything from our lives that may violate your word and convict us such that we may repent. Give us eyes to see our sins and convict. Guide us in our relationships and help us to treat others with the same love and kindness that You have shown to us. Help us to forgive others as we forgive ourselves according to the Lords prayer that Jesus himself provided for us.
Thank You, Lord, for Your unfailing love and grace. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
May this prayer and these words provide guidance,
