LORD, PROTECT MY REPUTATION & INTEGRITY
A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Proverbs 22:1
How often do you say your name daily at work or at school or at a doctor's office? If you call anyone on the telephone, you must identify yourself with your name. Depending on where you work, you can call certain people and have leverage in your telephone call because of your name or your company's name. Around the world, we know the names of well-known people who are movie stars, singers, politicians, radio-show hosts, football players or well-known pastors or evangelists, but some of them do not have a good reputation.
How is your memory with people's names? Can you remember your favorite elementary school teacher's name? Our children still remember many of their favorite teachers who impacted their lives. Bob always remembered his Bible College professor and he would often quote things that he taught the class. Are there special people who have touched your life that you will never forget their names?
I will never forget the pastor who knocked on our new home that Bob and I had just moved into on a Saturday morning asking us to visit his church in 1974. That Sunday we visited the church and, after his sermon, we both rededicated our lives back to Jesus Christ as Lord. It was in that church where Bob received the call to the ministry.
In The Blackaby Study Bible there is an "Encounter Note" to Proverbs 22:1 which says: "Your 'name' represents your character and your reputation. God gave His Son a name by which miracles were performed and people were saved. Protecting the integrity of your name can determine the kind of future you and your children will enjoy. A respected name is a valuable treasure."
Do you remember reading about Daniel's exceptional qualities in Daniel Chapter 6? He assisted Darius in ruling the empire and the King was planning to advance Daniel to an even higher position. The other administrators and satraps were very jealous of Daniel, so they came up with an idea how to get rid of Daniel because of his faith in God. They knew Daniel's character and reputation. Even the King’s decree did not change Daniel’s faithfulness in praying to God Almighty. What a reputation to have!
Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. Finally these men said, "We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God." Daniel 6:3-5
How is your reputation today? How is your spouse's reputation? I know that I was embarrassed, mortified and humiliated that Bob's sinful lifestyle was ruining our name and our reputation everywhere and especially at church. Divorce was not as common many years ago. People were still shocked when couples separated and divorced. Presently, the world is accepting divorce, while God is still saying, "I hate divorce." If marriage problems or a divorce has happened to you as a Christian, or you are a lay leader in church, or possibly you or your spouse were in ministry, do not allow the divorce to ruin your reputation as a Christian. The enemy has attacked your marriage, but you can choose to stand up and become the prayer warrior and fight for your marriage to be resurrected from the dead and God will get all the glory! Do not let the enemy try to put condemnation, shame, guilt or humiliation upon you. Never forget who you are in Jesus Christ. You are a child of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 1 John 3:1-5
Today you may feel like you have a flashing "D" on your forehead. Your circumstances may seem impossible and your reputation or character seems ruined. Do not believe this lie from the enemy. Allow your Heavenly Father to protect your character and reputation. Never forget how much He loves you and cares about all your circumstances and your marriage. God will never leave you nor forsake you.
Now let's talk about your beloved spouse that you love so very much. They have been tempted, became blinded and deceived, falling into the trap of sin. Once in the trap, instead of running from the sin, they have lied to themselves and many others about what is happening in their life. Never forget how the Lord ate with the tax collectors and "sinners." The Pharisees could not understand why Jesus would associate with people with bad reputations.
While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Matthew 9:10-13
May you know regardless of what you, your spouse or your child may have done or are doing, the Lord knows where they are and He has a plan to go rescue them. Jesus Christ came to this earth to seek and save the lost which includes your spouse and children who are living in the far country right now. He will go after your deceived, blinded and lost husband or wife, bringing them home so you can celebrate.
I pray that you will choose right now to develop a reputation of becoming a man or woman of faith wherever you go. I pray that you will have the reputation of being a mighty prayer warrior. I pray that you will have the reputation of living a Christ-like lifestyle regardless of what your spouse is doing presently. You can become the teacher to your children or grandchildren as you strive daily to have an excellent reputation with integrity as a person and as a Christian all the days of your life.
May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope is in you. Psalm 25:21
