Lord, I Trust You

Lord, I Trust You

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6(NKJV)

I was recently reflecting upon this scripture in Proverbs 3:5-6. It’s a verse that I memorized early on in life as I grew up in the church, but it wasn't until I got to be an adult who had given her life to the Lord and completely surrendered to Him that I came to understand what it fully means. The first eight words of this passage of scripture are truly the basis of my meditation as I’ve been thinking about trust. I started thinking about how I came to trust my spouse as we were dating and how I got to the point to where I trusted him enough to marry him, thereby surrendering my life of singlehood.

But then I also have to consider it from a spiritual standpoint to when I trusted God enough to give Him my life, surrender my all to Him and give Him all of me. That is also a trust that we all have, especially if we have given our lives to Christ. So we’ve given our lives to Christ, we’ve surrendered and we have said “Lord, I’ll trust you.†Not too long after saying those words do we get hit with some of the most trying circumstances that we have ever gone through in our lives. As soon as I married my husband the storms came full force and my prayer was always, “Lord I trust you.†But things never seemed to get any better. I’d get impatient and instead of acknowledging God in all that I did, I tried to do it my own way. Fail…I failed, I admit it. My husband had enough and started the process of being legally separated from me. “Lord, I trust you.â€

During the beginning of my stand, which started when I finally came to my senses during the second year of my marriage, there was this song that I would hear on the radio and even put on playlists that I listened to that would encourage my soul. This song is called “I Trust You†by James Fortune. The song itself speaks about going through trials and tribulations, storms and persecutions where we can’t see the Lord, we can’t feel His touch, we feel so alone and just how long the dark night seems to be.

For we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

During this stand for my marriage, I know that I have spent many nights alone crying out to God for comfort and strength and His help in my time of storm. Since we are to walk by faith and not by sight, I’ve had to remind myself that no matter what the situation looks like, no matter how hopeless it seems, how cold he (my husband) is towards me, how I feel about him, etc., I will not rely on that. My trust is fully in the Lord my God and I am going to trust Him no matter what because I know what He promised me. I also remind myself that without my trust and faith in God, I would be lost and without hope. So, because I hold out for that blessed hope we have in Christ, I stand firm in Him. There are several passages in the Bible that reminds us of God’s promise to “never leave nor forsake us†(Hebrews 13:5 Deuteronomy 31:6, 8; Joshua 1:5) so I keep His Word on my heart even as I go through the toughest of times.

Trusting God requires that we go through things. It’s not that our trust in God must be tested, but we will be tested through various trials of life and that will determine whether or not we meant what we have said about trusting in God through good times and bad, happy times and sad. It’s not always easy to trust in God because when we trust God we must fully rely on Him and take Him at His Word. We have a book, the Bible, that is full of the promises of God that He has made to us. If we say we trust Him, then we must trust Him and His Word.

“God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?†Numbers 23:19 (NKJV)

So when we say we trust that God will reconcile us back to our spouses and will deliver them from the hands of the evil one, do we fully know what we are saying? Do we know in order to fully trust in God and His Word that it will require us to have to wait and thereby trust on His perfect timing to deliver us from our situation?

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.†Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NKJV)

Will you believe the promises of God? Will you trust Him even in your marriage problems or any and every seemingly impossible situation? “…but with God, all things are possible.†Matthew 19:26. I would encourage all you standers to never give up, never give in, because our hope and trust is in the Lord and He will hear our prayers and deliver us.
