A young couple were driving through the desert during the scorching heat of the afternoon when their Jeep broke down. Their cell phone had died earlier in the day and they had no way of communicating with the outside world. They had turned off the main road miles back because they wanted to explore the beauty of the desert and take some pictures. They had their camera and tripod with them and as they were running out the door grabbed a bottle of water and a bag of chips to share. Needless to say they weren't prepared.
As the sun shone down on the top of the Jeep it made them feel like they were in an oven roasting. They quickly went through that bottle of water and as the afternoon went on they grew more and more thirsty. They tried looking for some type of water but found none. The guy remembered he had a shovel in his jeep in case they ever got stuck in mud. He thought maybe if he started digging a hole they would come into some water in the ground. He dug and dug and to no avail. The earth just kept falling in every time on top of itself. He grew exhausted and the heat was getting to him. They tried yelling at the top of their lungs to see if anyone could hear their cries for help. No one came. They tried looking for plants to eat to see if they could get some liquid from them, but the plants were all brown and dried up during that time of year. They tried and failed at everything they did. They both were hot and worn out and prepared themselves that they probably wouldn't make it. Hours went by and their hope was almost lost.
Out on the horizon they spotted something but it was so far away they couldn't make out what it was. The girl started panicking thinking maybe it was coyotes and they would be attacked. As the dark shadow drew closer to them, it was 3 men on horseback. The couple couldn't believe it. They were going to be rescued. It was 3 men, one of which was the owner of a huge ranch that was just over the hill. The men gave the couple some water and helped get their Jeep started. They escorted them back to the ranch to make sure they were okay. The ranch was only a short distance over the hill from where their Jeep was stopped. The couple were paralyzed because they thought they were in the middle of nowhere yet there was something so close but they couldn't see it.
I think this story is two fold. It tells us of how non-believers are but it also reveals sometimes how a believer can give up waiting for their prayers to be answered. The truth is so close but yet they don't see it. They try to do life on their own and when the storms come they get paralyzed because they are trying to do it on their own power. We aren't called to do life on our own. God is our strength and our source. He is our spring of living water. (Jeremiah 17:13) God is there all the time yet they don't know it. They are blind to see God. As a child of God, we know the truth and we are called to be the light that can shine into their lives. Don't be afraid to speak truth to people. Let your light shine for all to see and glorify God! You may just be the one who delivers the living water to those in need. Also don't give up on praying and seeking God through hard times just because the answer isn't coming quicker than you want it. We are into microwaving and God is into marinating. Keep on praying and don't give up. Your miracle could just be right around the corner or over the hill.
