Jeremiah 6:21 :
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.
Commentary on this verse:
This passage serves as a powerful reminder of the gravity of sin and disobedience. It serves to illustrate that divine judgment can affect entire families and communities, reinforcing the idea of corporate responsibility concerning sin, as discussed in numerous biblical themes, including the importance of accountability and repentance. In their obstinacy, the people have not only incurred the wrath of God but have isolated themselves from any hope of deliverance, as articulated in Jeremiah's impassioned warnings throughout the text. This makes the profound statement of “I will lay stumbling-blocks before this people…” indicative of their unwillingness to return to the paths of righteousness, paving the way for unavoidable calamity. Yes, in the process people would fall. People would become frustrated. People would even die in their rebellion. But God was doing all in His power to gently turn them away from the pathway that they had chosen, to turn them from their backsliding, back to a healthy relationship with Him.
Our prayer:
Adonai Elohim, our Great Lord, first we want to thank You for never giving up on us. Thank You for doing whatever was needed to reach our wandering heart. Please forgive us for being that obstinate child. We see now how foolish we have been, for You are the source of our happiness. You, the Creator, are the inception of our very life. You give us life a purpose. We are so grateful for Your faithfulness and the fact that You will never give up on us. We thank You for the obstacles, for even though they are difficult to navigate, they bring us back to You. We are blessed, oh, so blessed, to be counted among Your children. LORD God, we thank You for loving us. In Jesus‘ name we pray. Amen.
