Is God so powerful?

If God is all-powerful, why will He not be able to prevent evil in the world? If God is all good, can He not prevent suffering and hardship in the world? With the magnitude of God’s power that I know, does He allow bad luck and sickness and cruelty to come into the world because He just can’t do anything about it, or does He enjoy seeing people suffering?

The Bible tells us that God is indeed all-powerful (omnipotent) and all-good (omnibenevolent). However, He also granted humans free will. This freedom allows us to choose our actions, which can result in good or evil (Joshua 24:15, WEB). As a result, the evil and suffering we see in the world are often consequences of human choices.

In addition, the fall of humanity as described in Genesis led to a broken world, filled with hardship, sickness, and cruelty (Genesis 3:16-19, WEB). Yet, even in this brokenness, God can bring about good (Romans 8:28, WEB).

God does not delight in suffering. Instead, His heart grieves for His people (John 11:35, WEB). He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem the world and ultimately conquer evil, suffering, and death (John 3:16, WEB).

Let's pray together:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come to You with heavy hearts, seeking understanding amidst the evil and suffering in the world. Help us to trust in Your power and goodness, even when we don't understand. Comfort those who are hurting, and give us strength to choose good over evil.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

We've been reflecting on your questions, and we want to share more about God's heart in this. It's true that God is all-powerful and all-good, but He's also deeply loving. He didn't want robots, He wanted relationships. So, He gave us free will, knowing that we might choose wrongly and bring suffering into the world.

Imagine a parent who loves their child deeply but gives them freedom to make choices. The parent could step in every time the child makes a bad choice, but that would take away their freedom to learn and grow. Similarly, God allows us to experience the consequences of our actions, both good and bad.

But here's where it gets beautiful. Even in our brokenness and the suffering we cause, God doesn't abandon us. He sent Jesus, His only Son, to take on our suffering and defeat evil. Jesus didn't just die for us, He rose again, showing us that there's hope beyond our pain.

So, let's pray together: "Dear God, we trust in Your love and power. Help us to understand that even in the hard times, You're with us. Comfort those who are hurting, and give us the strength to choose love over hate, kindness over cruelty. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."

It all comes down to free will. If God blocked all people from causing harm in this world like murderers and criminals, cheaters, etc., that would be taking away their free will.
... sickness comes from Satan and we as believers need to pray against it. There are two forces at work in this world, not just God. Eventually, Satan will be bound, but that time isn't here yet

Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart.
