Disciple of Prayer
In the Gospel according to John, we find these words of Jesus that invite us to reflect on spiritual labor and the harvest of souls. Let me break it down:
- “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”
- Jesus refers to His divine purpose: fulfilling God’s will and completing the task entrusted to Him.
- “Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!”
- Here, Jesus uses an agricultural metaphor. Planting represents spiritual labor, and the harvest symbolizes people coming to faith.
- Jesus urges His followers to be attentive and recognize opportunities to share the message of salvation.
- “And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.”
- The “reapers” are those engaged in spiritual harvest. Their reward is eternal: leading others to everlasting life.
- Both the sower (preacher, faith-sharer) and the reaper (seeing conversions) experience joy and satisfaction.
- “One sows and another reaps.”
- Jesus acknowledges that some have prepared the spiritual ground before His arrival.
- The disciples are to build upon that groundwork, continuing the labor and bringing more people to faith.
