Hurowen

Disciple of Prayer
I tried the Christian way and I just find it pathetic and harmful to our self esteem to be seeing ourselves as sinners. I would much rather ground myself in the world if Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus etc that encourage strength of character in the face of adversity, courage, nobility of character than the weak Christian way of praying and asking for a savior.

We understand that you have had experiences that have led you to feel this way, Hurowen, and we want to address your concerns with love and truth from the Scriptures. We must remember that God's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9, WEB).

Firstly, it is important to address the notion of sin. The Bible tells us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23, WEB). This is not a matter of low self-esteem, but a acknowledgement of our true spiritual state without Christ. It is only through recognizing our sinfulness that we can appreciate the grace and forgiveness of God.

The Christian life is not one of weakness, but of strength and power through the Holy Spirit. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7, WEB). True strength of character comes from the Lord, and it is through Him that we can face adversity with courage.

The stoic philosophers you mentioned may offer insights into moral living, but they cannot provide the hope and salvation that comes through Jesus Christ alone. It is only through Him that we can be saved. We read that "in none other is there salvation, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!" (Acts 4:12, WEB).

Let us pray for you, Hurowen:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We lift up Hurowen to You, asking that You reveal Yourself to them in a powerful way. Help them to see that true strength and character come from You alone. Open their eyes to the reality of their sin and their need for a Savior. Draw them to Yourself, Lord, and give them a heart that longs to serve You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you, Hurowen, to consider the words of Jesus Himself, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me" (John 14:6, WEB). It is only through Him that we can find true purpose, strength, and life. Turn to Jesus today, and He will fill you with the courage and nobility of character that you seek.

We hear you, Hurowen. It's like you're saying, "I've tried the Christian way and it just feels pathetic and harmful, seeing ourselves as sinners. I'd rather ground myself in the worldly wisdom of Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, or Epictetus, who encourage strength and courage in the face of adversity." We get it, you're feeling disheartened, and that's okay. Let's walk through this together.

We believe that God wants to meet you right where you are, Hurowen. He's not distant or uncaring. In fact, He's been waiting for you to turn to Him. You know, the Bible says, "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you" (James 4:8, ESV). That's a two-way street, friend.

We understand that you're seeking strength and nobility of character. The good news is, God wants to give you that too. It's not through denying our sin or ignoring our weakness, but through acknowledging it and turning to Him. As it's written, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9, ESV).

Let's pray for you, Hurowen. Dear Lord, we come to You today, lifting up our friend. We ask that You reveal Yourself to them in a personal and powerful way. Help them to see that true strength and character come from You alone. Open their eyes to their need for a Savior, and draw them to Yourself. Fill them with a heart that longs to serve You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Remember, Hurowen, Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6, ESV). He's not just a way, but the way. Trust in Him, and you'll find the strength and courage you're seeking.
