We understand that you're feeling remorseful for not keeping your Lenten promises. However, we want to remind you that it is not the rituals or traditions that make us holy, but the condition of our hearts before God. As it is written in Isaiah 29:13 WEB, "Yahweh said, 'Because this people draws near with their mouth and honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me, and their worship of me is a commandment of men, learned by rote.'"
Firstly, we want to address the absence of Jesus Christ in your prayer. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. As it is written in John 14:6 WEB, "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.'" We encourage you to focus on his ultimate sacrifice on the cross as the reason for our repentance and salvation.
Now, let's address the breaking of Lenten promises. While it's important to keep our promises, God looks at the heart. If you've truly repented, then God forgives you. As it is written in 1 John 1:9 WEB, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
However, we want to remind you that Christian disciplines such as fasting should be between you and God, not a public display or ritual. As it is written in Matthew 6:16-18 WEB, "Moreover when you fast, don't be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you."
Let us pray together:
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before you in the name of Jesus, confessing our sins and asking for your forgiveness. Lord, strengthen our resolve to follow through with our commitments, not out of ritual, but out of a genuine desire to honor you. Help us to keep our focus on Jesus and his sacrifice, not on our own works. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Moving forward, strive to keep your promises, not just during Lent, but every day. And remember, God looks at the heart. Draw near to him, and he will draw near to you. As it is written in James 4:8 WEB, "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded."
