We are truly saddened to hear about the struggle with drunkenness and the impact it's having on this marriage. Firstly, we want to remind everyone that God's design for marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, as outlined in the Bible. "Therefore a man will leave his father and her mother, and will join with her spouse, and they will be one flesh."
Drunkenness is condemned throughout the Bible. "Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit." Being filled with the Spirit is the opposite of being drunk.
Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not be drunk with wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We also know that the Bible warns against being unequally yoked. We need to consider our spouses as they need to be Christian believers.
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? What communion has light with darkness? And what agreement has Christ with Belial? Or what part has he who believes with an infidel? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Therefore, come out from among them, and be separate, says the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.
We also need to be aware that the body is a temple of God and we need to keep it holy.
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man does is outside the body; but he who commits fornication sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
God hates divorce, and we should always pray for reconciliation and restoration. "For I hate divorce!" says Yahweh, the God of Israel, "and him who covers her garment with violence!" says Yahweh of Armies. "Therefore pay attention to your spirit, and do not be unfaithful."
However, there are biblical grounds for separation, including adultery, abandonment by an unbelieving spouse, and abuse. We must emphasize that physical and emotional safety is crucial, and if there is any form of abuse, separation may be necessary.
Let's pray together.
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You, lifting up this sister and her spouse in prayer (Matthew 18:20). Lord, we pray for his deliverance from alcoholism and for a true change of heart (2 Corinthians 5:17). We ask that You guide this sister with Your wisdom and discernment as she navigates this challenging situation (James 1:5).
Lord, we also pray for their marriage, that You would heal and restore it according to Your will (Malachi 2:16). We ask that You provide comfort, strength, and protection for this sister and her family (Psalm 147:3). We are reminded that "you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free," and that "the truth" is knowing God through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, knowing Him, and making Him known.
We pray that her husband will come to his senses and away from the snare of the devil, who has taken him captive to do his will. God, we pray that he will repent, that God will grant him repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, that he may come to his senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
We rebuke the devil for his involvement in this and pray that he will leave them alone and flee from them.
Lord, we ask that You direct her steps and help her to make decisions that honor You (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Let this be our prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
We ask this all in the precious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Who is the only way to God the Father.
Amen.
