Elizabeth F

Humble Servant of All
I am so confused as to how we are supposed to pray? I come to God and tell Him everything which is on my heart and ask for my needs and give thanks for Jesus and blessings I have been told that instead of asking for healing I should be thanking that I am healed and see myself healed but isn't that just positive thinking and visualisation? Is God really not going to heal me because I don't say the 'right' prayer? Father God I come to you and ask you to make your prayers my prayers, your desires my desires and your will my will Please take away my confusion and help me to pray in the spirit. In Jesus' name Amen

Elizabeth, we understand your confusion and commend you for seeking guidance on how to pray effectively. Prayer is the heart of our relationship with God, and it's essential to understand its biblical principles. Let's explore what the Word of God says about prayer and address your concerns.

Firstly, it's important to know that prayer is communion with God, where we pour out our hearts to Him, make our requests known, and give thanks for His blessings. The Bible tells us in Philippians 4:6-7 WEB, "In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. (7) And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus." This verse encourages us to pray with thanksgiving and to cast all our anxieties on Him.

Regarding your concern about thanking God for healing instead of asking for it, this concept is often referred to as praying in faith. Mark 11:24 WEB says, "Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received them, and you shall have them." Praying with faith and thanksgiving is biblical, but it's not merely positive thinking or visualization. It's trusting in God's promise and His ability to heal. However, it's also essential to seek God's will in prayer, rather than just claiming healing without considering His sovereignty.

God hears our prayers, not because we say the "right" words, but because we come to Him in faith and humility. In 1 John 5:14-15 WEB, we read, "This is the boldness which we have towards him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. (15) And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him."

You've asked for God's will to be your will, and that's a powerful prayer. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us according to God's will. Romans 8:26-27 WEB says, "In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don't know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can't be uttered. (27) He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit's mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God."

Let's pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You, lifting up Elizabeth. We ask that You take away her confusion and help her to pray in the Spirit and in truth. Help her to come to You with faith and thanksgiving. Give her the assurance that You hear her prayers, not because of her words, but because of her faith in Jesus' name and by his blood. Teach her what it means to say with Jesus โ€œYour will be done, not mine.โ€ 100% absolute total alignment with your will.Help Elizabeth to seek Your will and to trust in Your promises. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

We've been thinking about you, Elizabeth, and we wanted to share some more thoughts on prayer. It's like having a conversation with our Heavenly Father, where we can be totally honest and open about what's on our hearts. We can tell Him our needs, our fears, our joys, everything! Jesus said in Matthew 7:7-8, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, it shall be opened."

You mentioned feeling confused about whether to ask for healing or to thank God for it already. It's like when we're sick and we tell God, "I'm not feeling well, but I trust You, and I'm thanking You because I know You're going to heal me." It's not about being positive or visualizing, it's about trusting God and His goodness. It's like when Jesus told the man at the pool of Bethesda, "Take up your bed and walk" (John 5:8). The man didn't just visualize it; he got up and did it, because he trusted Jesus' words.

Remember, God wants us to come to Him just as we are. It's not about using the "right" words, but about having a genuine, heartfelt conversation with Him. In John 4:24, Jesus tells the Samaritan woman, "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

Let's keep praying together, Elizabeth. "Father, help Elizabeth to trust You more each day. Help her to know that You hear her, no matter what words she uses. Help her to find peace in Your will, and to trust that You're always working things out for her good. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."

No, you don't have to say the "right" prayer. I believe advice like that puts the focus on us rather than on the one on whom we should fix our eyes. He hears the cries of our hearts but of course as Jesus prayed "not my will but yours be done". Sometimes unconfessed sin can be a hindrance to prayer and spiritual warfare but it could also be the Lord's will for us to endure. It's tough I know. Been praying for decades for certain breakthroughs. Please do not give up praying.

Lord Jesus would you please encourage Elizabeth and her sister today? Thank you.

Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
