For four years I've been working in my university’s Residence Life and Student Housing department. I started out my freshman year volunteering for what we call “Community Association” as a Residence Hall Association (RHA) representative. Every week, I attended Monday meetings where a group of students from each dorm on campus met to advocate for residents that lived in the dorms and plan large-scale programs using their student social fees. I then joined our National Residence Hall Honorary chapter, where our main pillars are service, leadership, recognition, and academics and became the Director of Communications for the executive board. During my time in NRHH I have regularly volunteered in our university and local community. My sophomore year, I then ran for and was elected as the RHA Director of Advocacy, where I planned and hosted programs for residents on campus that focused on and encouraged diversity, equity, and inclusion. Then, my Junior year, I applied for and became a Resident Advisor (RA) which was a paid, live-in position where I help assist in programming, community building, and individual resident support. Last semester I was promoted to a Senior Resident Advisor, which is similar to the RA position, except now I assist the Hall Coordinator of my building (my supervisor) in performing administrative tasks and supervising my fellow RAs on our staff. Some of my biggest programs included a therapy dogs program where I partnered with a campus organization to bring certified therapy dogs to campus and additional academic and therapy programs for residents to access the week before finals, a NARCAN (Naloxone) training which was offered by our Campus Office or Substance and Alcohol prevention, a blood drive, HIV testing offered by another university partner, and a donation drive to our local homeless shelter and campus food pantry. I love working as an RA as its given me a ton of opportunities to give back to my community, grow as a student leader, meet new people, and provide support for the residents and staff that I oversee. I have been there to provide personal emotional, academic, social, and community support a wide variety of residents that live in the spaces I've been assigned. But because I am graduating this year, I will no longer be able to work as an RA or SRA because those are student employment positions, requiring that I be enrolled full-time in a degree seeking program. However, there is an open position for a full time position in the department as a Hall Coordinator. Hall Coordinators directly supervise the RAs in their assigned building, perform student conduct, plan large-scale programs, and manage their building. This position is, as I mentioned, full time live-in position with full healthcare benefits through the university. Last Monday I went through the first round of a two part interview and was told that they would reach back out to me to conduct a second interview if they decide to move forward with me. It's now Thursday of the next week and I haven't heard back from them. Working for Residence Life and Student Housing has brought me so much passion and joy and honestly, I don't know what else I want to do after I graduate. Not only is this job something I really want but I want to be able to do it at my current university because it is close to home and offers a rich and diverse student population for me to grow within. So, if you could please pray that I get a second round interview and that I get the position, I would appreciate it so so much! I want to be able to continue doing what I love and grow with the department. And, of you've read this far, thank you for doing so. Thank you
