Scripture: Proverbs 4:23
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
Psalm 16:7-11
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful[ one see decay. You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Prayer: Father, I want to guard my heart above all things. Search my heart and know my thoughts, and see if there is any wicked way in me. Lord, may I not follow my own heart; but, always be guided into the path of righteousness by you. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen
There is an intensity and urgency in this earnest pleading in Proverbs 4:23 to guard our heart above all else. In Scripture the heart is the seat of the thoughts, the will, the conscience, and the emotions. The heart is the storehouse for wisdom and all that influences the life and character of an individual. Jesus reminds us that we should love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, with every part of our inner being.—Matthew 22:37 Christ is our life, our truth, and our wisdom, and the Lord searches the heart and tests the mind. We are to guard the gospel truth that has been shed into our hearts. Yes, the knowledge of him who has brought us out of darkness into his glorious light —1 Peter 2:9 and who has taken us from the doors of death and breathed into us the breath of the new-life in Christ. “When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”—Colossians 3:1-4 “Above all else, guard your heart”! Keep your eyes on Jesus!
