Humble Servant of All
"Dear God, thank you for being such a loving and generous father in heaven. My whole life is a gift from you; I wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for you creating me and giving me a place in the world. Sometimes I get so preoccupied by stressful circumstances that I lose the right perspective on my life and need to be reminded of how many wonderful gifts you have given me so I can appreciate them. Please help me notice everything I have to be thankful for so I can develop a habit of expressing gratitude – to you and the caring people in my life – on a regular basis.
Give me an attitude of humility that will prevent me from feeling entitled to something I think is best for me, but that you know isn’t truly what’s best.
Help me to avoid getting angry when I don’t receive what I think I should receive from you. Remind me that there are no guarantees in this fallen world; even the next breath I hope to take is a gift from you that I can’t demand, but that you graciously allow if you choose to do so.
Help me understand how blessings work: they’re not given as transactions to appease me if I can convince you to send them, but as pure gifts to express your unconditional love for me and draw us into a closer relationship. So help me stay focused on you as the Giver, instead of becoming fixated on the gifts I want from you.
Bring the everyday miracles around me to my attention on a regular basis, from the embrace of one of my children or my dog or cat, to the wonderful food I enjoy for dinner. The more I start to notice them, the more I’ll train my mind to look for them – and when I look for them, I’ll always find plenty to appreciate. No matter what the current circumstances of my life are like and even in the most depressing situations, there’s always something to be grateful for, and the ultimate blessing is something I can never lose in this world: your constant, loving presence with me.
Help me structure my daily life in ways that promote a habit of expressing gratitude. Encourage me to spend time in prayer with you regularly, such as in the morning just after waking up or in the evening just before going to sleep. Every time I ask you to provide something I need, nudge me to thank you for something you’ve already given me.
Remind me of the miraculous ways you’ve answered my prayers throughout my life so far. Let the memories strengthen my faith that anything is truly possible for you to do in my life in response to my prayers.
Thank you for the angels who act as your messengers in my life, and thanks especially for the guardian angel (or group of guardian angels) you’ve assigned to care especially for me during my earthly life. Although I can’t usually see them, I experience the effects of their work in my life, and am so grateful for their protection, guidance, and encouragement. Thank you for the gifts of healing, and love you have provided to my family, friends, and all my brothers and sisters.
There's always so much to give thanks to you for God, since you're always at work in my life. Thanks for what you do -- and most importantly, for who you are! Amen."
