Good evening, I have a ### year old child who has ADHD and although he makes decent grades, when it comes to standardized testing, he does not do well. He did not pass the test to go to 5th grade but he took an alternative test and passed, so we made the decision not to send him to summer school. When I went on the site to look at things for the new year, it says he is retained. I feel like I failed as a mother because I was told that he did not have to go to summer school because he passed and what I see says he is retained. This happened in 3rd grade as well and my child went into depression and talked about suicide. Part of me is worried that this will happen again and part of me is saying that maybe I am worrying prematurely and everything is alright. I can't sleep at night wondering if a decision I have made failed my child. As a mother, we want the best for our children and I can't handle the talk about him wanting to take his life. Please help.

I suffer from an anxiety disorder. I was diagnosed as a teen but now I am ###. I have also been through suicidal thoughts, practiced self-harm, etc. Both my parents had such a hard time and the exact same thoughts as you. They thought that they failed as parents, they felt desperate and didn’t know how to help me. It’s important to maintain a good and healthy relationship with your child so that he can trust you. It is also important that you have a professional watch your child (which you probably do) and also you so that you will both take good care of your mental health. Remember that things do get better.
