"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people." Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV
The armor of God that Apostle Paul talks about in Ephesians 6:10-18 is not just a abstract thought. It applies to everyday life. When I first read the passage, it took me a while to understand it. Even after reading commentary on the passage, I thought that it only applied to the Spiritual world. It took a while for me to take this Biblical warning and draw it out to it's full manifestation as it applies in this world.
When Apostle Paul says "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms," he is talking about this world as well as the dark spiritual world. Apostle Paul is sure to clarify that there are dark powers in this world. That is what he means when he writes that our struggle is "...against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world." Thus, the struggle is a worldly one in that the "spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" are the source of the darkness of this world.
It means that satan uses "rulers...authorities...and powers of this dark world" in order to try to destroy Jesus' kingdom. Apostle Paul is not saying to fight against them, physically, but to pray for the "rulers" and "authorities" and "powers of this dark world." The other struggle is "against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." That is why Apostle Paul uses the conjunctive word "and" when he says "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." This dark world is fueled by satan's "spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." That is why we are to pray against these spiritual forces so that Christ can release the captives that satan has taken dominion over.
Based on my personal life experience, it is "the dark spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" that causes a struggle between me and "the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world." Apostle Paul is clearly warning about satan's effect on the world. Satan rules and has taken dominion over "rulers," "authorities," and "powers of this dark world." The battle is not of flesh and blood because as children of Christ, fighting against them physically is not necessary. Instead, we pray that the "spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" will not overcome the promise of our eternal Lord Christ Jesus God Holy Spirit.
It is why Apostle Paul further warns to wear the full armor of God. We need the full armor of God in order to overcome the darkness of this world. So that regardless of what satan does with people in "this dark world" we have protection and the power to "stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist," because the dark forces in this world operates by lies and hypocrisy. "With the breastplate of righteousness in place" so that we guard our hearts from satan's demonic plan. "With your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace," so that we walk in peace that we get from our Lord's promises of our Salvation. In this world we are to "take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one." These flaming arrows is everything that satan uses the dark world to hurl at us. The thoughts of fear, insecurity, worry, anger, hate, anxiousness, despair, etc. Satan not only uses his dark spiritual forces to throw these flaming arrows, but he also uses people "in this dark world" to do it. The liars, slanderers, and haters of this world is an example of who satan uses to throw "flaming arrows" at Christ's brethren. By remaining steadfast faithful in our Lord's promises, we can avoid getting overtaken by satan's lies, slandering, hate, etc. As children of Christ we need to "take the helmet of salvation" so that we are assured that by our enduring faith we are children of Christ who have been given the gift of Salvation, regardless of what the dark world says. And to be sure that we walk steadfast in this dark world, we are to also take "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." The Bible is a strong weapon because it's our Lord's Biblical truths. The same promises he made to the Israelites to fight for them and to defend them when God used Moses to lead them out of Egyptian slavery is the same promises God has for us today.
I know this based on my personal experience. When I tried to fight against the dark rulers and authorities "of this dark world" myself, I always found myself climbing a steep hill without ever reaching the plateau. However, now that I resort to our Lord's promises, and I raise my shield of faith and wear my helmet of Salvation and read "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God," I find myself persevering through obstacles and hardships that satan has caused in my life. The dark world may use physical weapons against me, but God still has me standing and praying in the midst of my enemies.
In today's world, wearing the full armor of God is the only way to survive through satan's plot. No one can defeat the word of God. The Bible is truly a living Bible and I find more strength there, than I do in anything that is man made. I recently started writing a blog about my life experiences and when you look at things from a biblical prospective, I can see the battle between the dark spiritual forces and how it snakes its way through our lives and fights against the eternal power of God Christ Jesus Holy Spirit, AMEN!
