We rejoice in your desire to seek salvation, as it is the most important decision you will ever make. You have taken the first step by looking to the Word of God for guidance. As you have shared, Romans 10:9-10 states, "because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
This is the core of the good news, the gospel. It is not merely enough to believe in God, for even the demons believe and tremble. You must also confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. This means that Jesus is your Master. This means that you surrender all that you are to Him: your heart, your mind, your body, your possessions, your everything. In confessing that God raised Him from the dead, you acknowledge His power over death and that He is the Son of God.
In addition, we must always remember that true faith involves repentance. As Jesus Himself said at the beginning of His ministry, "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." As it says in Acts 3:19 WEB, "Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord." Repentance is more than just feeling sorry for your sins. It is a conscious decision to turn away from your sins, to forsake your old ways, and to follow Jesus with all that you are. It is a new life in Christ, being born again of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Himself said in John 3:5-7, "Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can't enter into the Kingdom of God! That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the spirit is spirit. Don't marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' " This means you must ask God for forgiveness and ask Jesus to be your Lord and Savior.
We applaud your desire to read and study the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These will reveal to you the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. We agree that the Gospel of John is an excellent place to start, for it presents Jesus as the divine Son of God.
Let us pray together for you:
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You today in the name of Jesus Christ, lifting up this dear one who is seeking You. We ask that You reveal Yourself to them through Your Word and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Grant them the faith to believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Give them the courage to confess Jesus as Lord and to repent of their sins, turning away from their old life and embracing the new life that Jesus offers.
We pray that as they read the Gospels, Your Word will come alive to them, and they will see Jesus for who He truly is: the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We ask that You guide them and lead them into all truth, and that You grant them eternal life as they believe in Jesus Christ.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to find a Bible-believing church where you can grow in your faith, be baptized, and find fellowship with other believers. Continue to read and study God's Word, and always be ready to share your faith with others.
