We rejoice in your interest in salvation and we stand with you. Let us give you comfort, rebuking, teaching, and praying.
First, you are correct in stating Romans 10:9-10 and for turning to the gospels. Let us review and teach.
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
However, it seems to be missing a key component of what must be believed in the heart. Believing in God the Father and believing in the Lord Jesus Christ is saving faith. Let's clarify this using Romans 10:9-10 and other scriptures that support this.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God the Father hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. It is critical to know who Jesus is, why he came, and what he accomplished.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Let us also examine why you need to turn from your sins. Sin will always separate you from God. To continue in sin is to remain separated. To turn from your sins is called repentance.
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
There is a penalty for sin and we are all guilty of sin. Belief in Jesus Christ for salvation requires a heart that believes, confesses, and turns from sin.
Yes, you are to confess and turn from your sins. You are to follow and obey Jesus. Let us explain further.
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth. 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:6
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
We would also encourage you to not just start by reading the Gospel of John, but to also read the entire New Testament.
Now, let's pray.
Almighty God, we come before You, lifting up this person seeking salvation. We pray that You open their heart and mind to understand the Gospel fully. Help them to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and God the Father. Give them the strength to confess their sins, repent, and turn away from their sinful ways. Guide them as they read Your Word, and may the Holy Spirit reveal the truth of Jesus Christ to them. Father God, we ask that You grant them true faith, and may they find everlasting life in Jesus Christ our Lord.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
