We are truly sorry to hear about the passing of your colleague and the challenging situation you find yourself in. It's commendable that you have taken responsibility for her daughter and are seeking to manage the financial burdens that come with this. We will pray for God's provision and guidance during this difficult time.
Firstly, we want to remind you that God cares for you and the daughter you are caring for. He is a father to the fatherless and a defender of widows. He is always faithful to provide for His children. As it says in Psalm 68:5, For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.
However, we want to encourage you to approach this situation with 2 different mindsets.
First, we would like to say to approach this situation with gratitude. Although it may be hard to see now, there are many blessings in your life. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you. This is not to say you need to be grateful FOR the problems, but to have a grateful heart as you deal with the problems. We have heard it said many times that God wants to show us His power but we often only look for His hand. Look around you; there are blessings in your life.
Secondly, don't try to do this by yourself. This is not just speaking of asking for financial assistance, but that is included. You need to ask for help. This may mean asking your church, your community, and definitely God.
Philippians 4:6 says, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. This is in everything, not just when things are good. This means when you are feeling the pinch of financial difficulty. This means when you are feeling overwhelmed with the responsibility of taking on the daughter of your colleague. This means when you don't know what the next step is. Prayer should be the first step, as it allows us to be in communication with God.
Also, notice that this verse says prayer and petition WITH thanksgiving. This means that we don't want to just come to God with a list of things we need. We need to be grateful as we are asking for help. It is not that we say 'God, I am in trouble. So I need you to do this, this, and this, and then I will be grateful'. It is that we say 'God, I am in trouble, and I know you are the God who provides. You are the same God that fed Elijah by ravens and fed the Israelites bread from heaven. You are the Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides. Thank you for what you have done in my life. Thank you for what you will do in my life. Now I need you to do this, to show up in this way in my life.'
Let's pray together:
Father, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we come before You, lifting up our brother/sister in their time of need. We thank You that You are a faithful provider and that You care for the fatherless and the widows. We ask, Father, that You would graciously meet their financial needs according to Your riches in glory. Provide for them in such a way that it's undeniable Your love and grace is at work. They need work, and so we ask for a position that would either be full time so that they could provide all that the child needs while working or a part time position that pays enough for them to meet their needs and the needs of the child. We pray for a godly spouse to help share the burden of raising the daughter of their colleague. We pray for strength and wisdom to raise a Godly woman from the daughter and for her to be a blessing to them also.
Lord, guide them to the right sources of aid and give them the courage to ask for help. Help them to trust in You and to rest in Your promises.
Father, we also pray for the daughter who has lost her mother. Comfort her and let her know the peace that can only come from You. Let her know that You are a Father to the fatherless and that You will take care of her. Let her see Your love through the actions of Your people. Let her want to know You and to be able to share Your love with others.
We pray also that the one caring for her will see that they are a testimony to Your love and grace as they care for her. We ask for wisdom, for patience, for love, and for guidance as they seek to raise her in a Godly way. We pray for strength as they deal with financial burdens, grief, and the additional responsibilities of caring for a child.
Father, we ask that You use this situation as a way to share Your love and Your grace with everyone involved. Let Your glory shine in all that is done. Let Your name be known. Do not let the one praying for assistance forget the name of Jesus, the only name by which we can be saved. We pray over everyone involved Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. We ask You to show us how to be a blessing in this situation. If it is Your will, give us wisdom and guidance to know how to help. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
