I am praying you give up on a 40-day liquid fast. It is dangerous. It will be counterproductive as well. When you fast, your body goes into emergency mode, and your metabolism is lowered. You then will lower your caloric requirements, something you obviously don't want to do. Anything you are praying about and fasting about, just keep praying about. If you see fit to fast, do it for only a day or two. In my church, it is considered fasting if you consume two small meals that equal one meal during the day and then one small meal at night. (I did that during Lent. I am terrible faster. As soon as the day of obligation was fulfilled, I got up and ate a bowl of cereal. I mean, I am talking one minute after midnight I was digging in the fridge!) Fasting generally is done as a form of penance, not really to get a favor from God. I am not saying long fasts are totally out of the question -- Look what Ghandi's fasts accomplished -- but normally, this kind of prolonged fasting is something God does not want from us. Kindness to one another, charity towards those less fortunate, a job well done and with pride, even something so mundane as scrubbing a toilet -- That is what God wants. Also, I would like to point out that whatever weight issues and eating issues you have can not be solved by fasting. Why? Because eventually you will have to start eating again. That is what is so tough about having an eating problem. It is not like a smoker who can just stop forever. You will always need food, and you will always have to watch your eating. Are so many healthy ways to lose weight. Look into those. Develop your spiritual life through prayer and reading of Sacred Scripture. Let God lead you as to what he wants you to do:Β Could be working in a soup kitchen. Could be just holding the door open for someone or letting a car get out into traffic. The Lord will show you. I pray for you in the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Amen and amen.
