FAITH AND OBEDIENCE
Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am" he replied. Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about." Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. Genesis 22:1-3
What would you have done if God had spoken to you like he spoke to Abraham? I love to teach and read about Abraham's life and his walk of faith. There are such powerful lessons of truth throughout his life that you can use to help you through standing and believing for your marriage to be resurrected from losing the love in your marriage or even from a divorce.
Abraham is used by God to be our teacher in the "School of Faith." How are you doing in walking and believing in faith that the Lord is going to intervene in your beloved husband’s or wife’s life, some way, somehow, because you have chosen to stand in the gap and believe in the mighty awesome power of God? We know of many standers who have fallen into a trap of the enemy, Satan, by giving up on their marriage or getting involved with someone else. Please run from the temptations, tricks and schemes as Satan is trying to destroy you, as well as your beloved spouse. You may be falling into a trap of the enemy by battling doubt, unbelief, having lack of faith or not choosing to trust the Lord.
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:7-10
In the "School of Faith." Abraham had several tests. Abraham had to leave his loved ones by a step of faith and move to a new land. Abraham also was tested by many different experiences in his life. Abraham passed some tests, but he also failed some. One we all know about is Sarah having a child. Abraham did not wait for God's timing. Instead, he listened to Sarah and had a child by Hagar. Sometimes we are not going through a test, but it is actually a temptation from the enemy. You need to know and learn to tell the difference between a trial (used by God) or a temptation, which is a trick or scheme from the enemy.
We are never too old to face new challenges, fight new battles and learn new truths from God's Word. Abraham teaches us how to face and handle the tests of life to bring glory to God. I know I failed a temptation from the enemy by divorcing Bob. But when God spoke to me in a church service two months after our divorce, I know I passed the test. I surrendered my life to my marriage and made a total commitment to my Lord forever. Have you done this yet?
God spoke to Abraham about his son, Isaac, and then he had to travel about fifty miles. Think about Abraham's obedience. How are you doing in obeying the Lord in the little or big things? What has the Lord been speaking to you about? Have you obeyed Him? Today, read Genesis Chapter 22:1-19:
On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, 'Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.'" Genesis 22:4-5
Do you notice Abraham's statement, "We will come back!" Now that is a man of faith. Let me share another powerful scripture emphasizing what Abraham was thinking. He believed in God's promise about Isaac. Abraham believed that God could even bring Isaac back to life, if he had died.
By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned." Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death. Hebrews 11:17-19
Are you speaking faith when you to talk to people? This is an important lesson to learn. You are speaking faith or you are speaking death about your marriage. I started speaking faith to whomever I would talk to. If they asked questions, I shared my testimony of how the Lord touched and changed my own heart first. I knew that God was going to bring Bob back home some day. I would open my Bible and share scriptures and ask them to pray for Bob. Do you see how you can become a man or woman of faith, instead of speaking gossip or slandering your beloved spouse?
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together. Genesis 22:6-8
We need to depend on God's provisions. He will never fail us. He did not fail Abraham either. Think about all that Abraham experienced and learned while growing in the Lord. Are you willing to learn to grow in the Lord and increase your faith? Are you willing to be obedient to the Lord's will and way in your life?
Now may I also ask you to think about Isaac, Abraham's son. Isaac was probably a young adult who was old enough to resist his father's instructions. But Isaac also shows us his complete submission to God and his obedience to following his father's instructions of being placed on the altar. Can you imagine how many times Abraham had told Isaac the story of his birth and the promises that God had given to him about their future generations? So Isaac surrendered his own will and way to God's way. Then God showed them both His mighty power and ability; that nothing is too hard for God to do.
When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son." Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. Genesis 22:9-14
What are you facing today? Do you fear God? Are you walking in faith? Ask the Lord if you are in complete submission to His will and way in your life and marriage. God does speak. First, praise the Lord. Then pray, ask your questions, and then wait for His answer. If God does not answer the first day, ask the next day, until you hear His answer.
Have you made a total commitment to your marriage, regardless of what your spouse may be saying to you? If not, what do you need to change? Ask your Lord God to direct your every step as he did for Abraham. Learn to hear the Lord's voice and be obedient to His directions every moment of your life. Choose to be obedient to God's way! Be an honor student in the "School of Faith." You will be blessed if you do!
