Starting today, Monday September 9, 2013, this site will no longer send any emails. This is primarily due to the near total lack of security of email on the Internet. In almost all cases, emails are sent from one place to another in plain text. Then once at the destination, they may not even be safe there.
Recently, I enabled encryption on incoming and outgoing email. I was very surprised that almost no other email server that connected was requesting to use encryption to handle the message. There were a couple of exceptions, but it was nothing like it should be. Also, given current news, it doesn't even seem safe once email gets to it's ultimate destination.
Why is this important? The emails you can receive from here contain your user name as well as what messages you posted and who is private messaging you. This is sent across the country or the world, where anyone who is tapped in can read it right off the wire in plain text. In addition, anyone in a government agency could easily figure out who you are by associating your email with your ip address and referencing that against your Internet Provider records. They know who is using what address at what time. Based on the already revealed news, I assume all these things are being done and not part of some far fetched idea.
It is very likely that the collection of this information is being or will ultimately be used against people for reasons far beyond what they were originally intended. History is full of examples.
In addition, email is nightmare to manage. There is massive paranoia and inaccurate labeling of things as spam when someone may just think they are hitting a delete or filing button. This causes problems for this site in that some of our mail servers can be blocked or our site can be blacklisted and even shutdown based merely on accusations. In some cases, our email gets blocked because one site of the thousands that our provider also hosts gets blocked. Some blacklists use intimidation to block the entire network when that happens. In short, email was becoming an area where too many outside forces were able to dictate our behavior. Just in the last two weeks there were two such incidents.
As a result, all email notifications on the site are now being turned off. Only in-site notifications will be available when you visit the site or refresh a page. Eventually, an option may be put in place that will not require refreshing the page here to see if there is a notification. Something like an inline notice that shows up on the page for a few seconds. This will be a future development.
All email addresses on this site in your member record will be erased from the database starting today.
For new member registrations, they will not have an input for email. They will just select a name and password.
Please carefully remember your username and password from now on. There is no function to retrieve a lost password or username. You will need to create a new account if this happens.
Thanks again for all your patience. There are some more changes being reviewed such as members being able to post anonymously and better notifications. But that's it for right now.
