Do You Have Sin
In Your Marriage?
Bob and I had sin in our marriage, but I did not know what to do to stop it or how to pray for us. There are spouses leaving home every day to do what they want to do, regardless of what the Bible teaches. They do not fear God with their actions or behavior. They have no regard for their marriage vows, the marriage covenant, or the pain that they are causing their spouse, their children and so many other loved ones. They are being seduced and deceived by the enemy, Satan.
Why do you boast of evil, you mighty man? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? Psalm 52:1
Your spouse or a rebellious teenager or young adult has been tempted, deceived, seduced or blinded by the enemy, Satan. They became deceived as Eve was in Genesis and seduced by Satanรขโฌโขs lies. Let me give you a warning to never let your guard down so that the enemy will not come back into your home to steal, kill and destroy another loved one or a returned spouse. Your beloved husband or wife is not your enemy, Satan is. (Ephesians 6:12-13)
Your spouse has been drawn away and tempted, enticed, or seduced by the sinful desires of their flesh or misled by false statements or lies. You and I must never stop fighting the battle in our prayer closet for our loved ones regardless of their age. We must always remember whom we are fighting against!
How does the enemy get into our homes? Let me mention two ways, today:
1. Satan gets permission from God to allow His servant, Job, or us, to go through a tragedy to see if Job (or us) will maintain our faith and love for our God in the midst of unexplainable crisis and undeserved suffering. We hear of many people who are growing spiritually and seeking the Lord, getting more involved in church and it is as if God was bragging to the enemy about you or your spouse and the Lord gives permission to put you through a testing or adversity, knowing you will be blessed in the end. (Job 1 and 42)
2. There is sin in your marriage. There is sin in you or in your spouse's heart. There has been a crack in your foundation and that is where sin came in. Sin came as a temptation, as a trick or scheme from the enemy or from your sinful flesh that has not died or been crucified to God's will and way.
Another powerful example of sin in the camp is in Joshua, Chapter 7. Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Now remember, Joshua had just had the Jericho wall collapse due to the power of God destroying their enemy. Joshua then had his men from Jericho spy on another enemy in another region. When the men returned, they told Joshua they would not need as many men as there are only a few men there. Then they went to fight and they lost the battle! What happened? There was sin in the camp. Never forget, that our Lord God knows everything.
So about three thousand men went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai, who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes...Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the Lord remaining there till evening. The elders of Israel did the same, and sprinkled dust on their heads. And Joshua said, "Ah, Sovereign Lord, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?" Joshua 7:4-9
Look at what happened! Joshua became defeated, discouraged and was ready to give up, even after the miracles of crossing the Jordan and the collapsing of the Jericho wall! Why? He took his eyes off his Lord God and looked at his circumstances. When Joshua cried out to his Lord God, He answered and told him why they were defeated. There was sin in their camp!
The LORD said to Joshua, "Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction." Joshua 7:10-12
God wants us to live a Christ-like life. He wants us to be different than the world. I always try to remind myself, our children and grandchildren, "What would Jesus do?" That can keep all of us out of a lot of trouble!
"Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, 'Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: That which is devoted is among you, O Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove it." Joshua 7:13
You and I must know that we will not receive answers to prayers or have miracles in our lives if we have hidden sin in our hearts. Your Lord knows everything. What has He been dealing with you about lately? What have you been saying to your Lord, "I have a right? Look at what my spouse is doing? I canรขโฌโขt forgive!" Are you hiding unforgiveness, bitterness, jealousy, anger or hopelessness in your camp? Tell your Lord your fears and anxieties. Is there sin in your heart? Ask the Lord to reveal it to you today.
I love to pray scriptures for our family, for you, and for all the prodigals to be cleansed from all their impurities and idols. What is before your Lord in priorities? Your marriage? Has standing become an idol? Do you want your marriage restored more than you want a relationship with your Lord? Has your career, money, kids or a sport become more important than your Lord? God will not bless His people who refuse to remove sin from their lives.
Remember David, in 2 Samuel 12:1-14. He thought he had committed adultery and murder without getting caught. He had lived with Bathsheba over a year before Nathan confronted him with his sin. You may know the beautiful Psalm that David prayed in Psalm 51 while confessing and repenting of his hidden sin. This is an excellent Psalm that you could pray as a prayer for you and your spouse.
Pray that the Lord will wash you, cleanse you, and purify you from any and all sins that may be hidden in your heart. "Lord, lead me and my husband or wife into the paths of righteousness." Let me suggest you pray specific scriptures with your spouse's name in them asking that all your spouseรขโฌโขs sin will be removed from their heart quickly. God's Word will not return void. Let me share a few scriptures that you can personalize and pray:
Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:3
"I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." Ezekiel 36:25-26
Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:9-10
"Lord, remove all sin from me and my marriage now! In Jesus Name I pray. Amen."
God bless,
