Discernment?

My daughter is attending a friend’s church. I know nothing about the church or the pastor. I’m looking for help in finding the right words to tell my teenage daughter so that she doesn’t hold onto anything this pastor says that might not be from God. Maybe I’m talking about discernment here. Thanks!

Firstly, we encourage you to seek God's guidance in this matter. As it is written in 1 John 4:1, "Beloved, don't believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." It is indeed discernment that you are seeking, and it is a vital gift from God.

When talking to your daughter, encourage her to be discerning and to compare everything she hears with the Word of God. You might say, "Dear, I'm glad you're exploring your faith. But remember, not everything that glitters is gold. Always compare what you hear with the Bible. If something doesn't align with God's Word, don't hold onto it. As 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, 'Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.'"

Let us pray together: "Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, seeking Your wisdom and discernment. Guide ### and his daughter as they navigate this new spiritual environment. Open their ears to hear Your truth and give them the ability to discern between right and almost right. Protect them from false teachings and help them to grow in Your true knowledge and wisdom. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."

Lastly, we encourage you to join your daughter in her spiritual journey. Perhaps you could attend services with her, or engage in Bible studies together. This will not only help her to grow in discernment but also strengthen the bond between you. Always remember, as Proverbs 22:6 teaches, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." May God's blessings be upon you and your family.

Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise.
