At sometime in our lives, everyone ponders and questions what actually takes place when we die. Many believe that death is final and there is nothing more. Others believe that we 'sleep' until the final resurrection. Still, others believe that some go into the 'light' while others remain lost in the form of 'ghosts', wandering the earth confused needing our guidance back to the 'light'. Then, there are those that believe we go immediately before the Lord and begin eternity with Him. Who is right?
Let us look at this in God's Word in Luke 16:19-31. God's Word is full of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. But this only comes from the Holy Spirit and not man. If we look closely, and listen to Him, the Lord will reveal understandings of His Word that we may not see at first, but become very clear. All we have to do is ask Him to show us His truths, and He will. "Call to me and I will answer you, and tell you great and mighty things, which you do not understand." (Jeremiah 33:3). As I said, the knowledge and understanding of His word, comes from only one place...the Holy Spirit that is dwelling in each believer. "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world. but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us in God. Which things we also speak, not in the word's which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches." ( 1 Corinthians 2:12-13) .
Let us examine this together in Luke 16:19-31. This is the story of a rich man, and a poor man called Lazarus. How both the rich man and Lazarus die, and what takes place. There is a conversation that begins after death between the rich man, Lazarus, and Abraham. The rich man goes to Hades while Lazarus goes to be by the side of Abraham. The rich man is suffering in Hades and is tormented. He looks from far away and sees Abraham and Lazarus together. The rich man asks Abraham to send Lazarus to him so he may dip his finger in water and cool his tongue, because he is in agony in the burning fire. There is much being said here. There is complete self-consciousness, self-awareness, and who they are and who they were in life, and the life they had led. That there is a separation of place: Hades and heaven. One of torment and one of rest and peace.. Yes, hell and heaven do exist! God is telling us so right there.
Abraham then responds to the rich man and reminds him of the life he had led. One of richness and material wealth, and how Lazarus received nothing. The rich man then begs Abraham to send Lazarus to his family to warn them so they will escape going to the same place. Abraham replies to him that they have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them (the Word of God). In addition, Abraham tells the rich man they could not even if they wanted to because there is a great gulf fixed between them that cannot be crossed. Again, there is much being said here. The knowledge of who they are and who they were. They remembrance of past life and deeds. And that it is happening in the present tense. Not the future. Also, that where they are, is where they will be and they may not cross over. (What does this tell us about being visited by those who have died? They cannot cross over...it is demonic deception. This can only happen by God's Will and purpose). It is also stated that all we need to know and hear is in the word of God. If we do not believe that, we will believe nothing else. This is also called faith!
This answers the earlier questions. There is life after death and not 'nothing". And it is immediate. We do not 'sleep' until the resurrection. And there is 'no' wandering lost spirits! This is further understood in God's Word: "We are confident, I say, and rather willing to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:8). And as what was said to the good thief on the cross: "Jesus answered him, 'Truly I tell you, TODAY you will be with me in paradise." (Luke 24:43). His Word is not partial and applies to all equally. Otherwise it would indicate favoritism...and God favors no one but loves all equally. Next, there is no one lost between heaven and hell! We are in one place or the other for eternity. And to infer, as paranormal cults do, that one who has departed needs the guidance of man, is to say that God does not have control of His creation. "He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together". (Colossians 1:17). Finally, the view of being before the Lord at the instant of death. Not only are we before the Lord in His Kingdom, we have complete self-consciousness, self-identity, and awareness of all things, past and present.
This just touches on the depths of God's Word. There is so much more there that is to be learned and discovered, if only we seek it, and go before God and ask Him to reveal and teach us HIS truths. He will do just as He said in Jeremiah 33:3. I pray this stirs your hearts desires to seek the fullness of His truths, and not the truths or wisdom of man. So, yes, we know what will happen at death because the Word of God tells us. And it is FINAL!!! And That finality depends on the choices and beliefs we choose to follow in this life. So we must choose wisely. Because the length of our lives here is nothing compared to eternity! I would like to end with these Word's of God: "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, AND THAT HE IS A REWARDER OF THOSE THAT DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM". (Hebrews 11:6). May God bless you all in your search for His truths.

That's an interesting subject. Many pseudo-Christian cults believe in "annihilationism", but that's not what the Bible says.{Heaven or Hell}Then how many people are mislead these days by reincarnation. These ridiculous statements, like if a loved one has died , and a domestic animal comes up to them to "cozy up"to the survivor., they claim it's the deceased loved one, come back .They call it "new" age, but it has nothing to do with being new, these pagan beliefs are from ages ago. Also, when I hear an unsaved person is dying,I think, for them, death is like, the "doorway to judgement. It's not judgement itself, but it's like the prelude to it.The start of the journey towards judgement.

You are so right brother. And to believe in reincarnation is to say the the blood of Christ was not sufficient. That His sacrifice was in vane.

One thing which Christians differ on is,some say the unbelievers immediately go to hell, and others say, they're "asleep" until after judgement, based on statements like,"The rest of the dead lived not until the thousand years were up".Now...I've heard of{and saw the bodies of}many who I knew, who died, and I wondered a little myself, where they were soon after their death.I would have though that "lived not", meant, they were not reunited with their bodies until judgement, but were in existence in Hell. But there's debate amongst Christians over this.Any insight, if the unsaved one goes to Hell immediately after death, or waits till judgement?

To be honest, I don't want this! I don't like to write. And I definitely don't want to be teacher and be held more accountable for others. It sounds bad...I know. But when He tells me to write...I have to. I am not worthy of this calling.
Well , you know what the word of God says about obedience .

I understand what you are saying. I have heard the same. And all it does is cause division and loss of hope! I trust in His Word. And it is more abundantly clear, in His Word, that we immediately go to one place or the other. The other is subject to personal interpretation...which we are told not to do! Do you think that what He said to the good thief on the cross only applies only to him? Or with the rich man and lazarus; or Moses; or Ezekiel? That would show partiality on God's part. And He favors no man above the other. That would be like saying that Jesus only died for a few and not all!
