Believers ought especially to be on their guard in spiritual matters -- let us not forget the admonition of Jesus, "Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them, otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven" (Matt 6). Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, in his classic sermon series / commentary, Studies on the Sermon on The Mount, is quick to unpack this point regarding caution in prayer at great length. We must be careful of our "spiritual reputation" as being a "person of prayer" he says.
But there is almost no place where the heart betrays it's true desire for recognition as the "Parable of the Prodigal Son" who sees he has been laboring faithfully, "I have been slaving for you for all these years" -- yes, Luke 15, that is the self-disclosure of his heart that his work was not seen as co-laboring with his father, but rather "slaving" for God. Martha had the same problem -- she was in a serving mode -- a works mentality of sorts, who did not esteem Mary's "receiving from the Lord" as anything significant.
Let us remember do do our work for God, focus less on numbers (this is especially true of evangelists and number of souls, prayer warriors and numbers of prayers, worship leaders and hours in the prayer room, dove awards, most thanked, et cetera... The Lord Jesus would beg us to do our work for the Lord and be like the person in Matt 25, "And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39'When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' 40"The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me." TWO MAIN POINTS -- THEY KEPT NO RECORD OF THEIR DEEDS -- THEY HAD TO BE REMINDED OF THEM -- and -- WHATEVER THEY DID FOR OTHERS, THE LORD COUNTED IT AS DOING IT FOR HIM -- THAT SHOULD BE OUR FOCUS, not envy at who isn't praying, or evangelizing, or open-air preaching : )
