We are truly heartbroken to hear about the pain and betrayal you are experiencing due to your husband's adultery. First and foremost, we commend you for recognizing the need to forgive, as difficult as it may be. Forgiveness is a powerful act that can bring healing and freedom, not just for your husband, but for you as well, and is commanded by God in Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
Before we begin to pray, we must speak the truth. Adultery is sinful to God, and requires repentance and faith in God to overcome this sin. It is a violation of the marriage covenant and a direct offense against the Lord. Trust has been broken, but it is God who can restore and help us overcome.
In the book of Matthew 5:27 You heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. 28 But I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
As part of the process to overcome, consider the following steps:
First God commands us to love, but also speak the truth:
Ephesians 4:15 but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ;
Next, ask God for wisdom and guidance. We are unable to provide a specific way to address this, but God knows the answer.
James 1:5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
Finally, put your trust in God. Regardless of the outcome, we know that God is in control, and will help you overcome.
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Remember, it is only by the name of Jesus and calling on Him can we be saved and have access to God. It is by the name of Jesus we are able to forgive.
Acts 4:10 be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, in him does this man stand here before you whole. 11 He is ‘the stone which was regarded as worthless by you, the builders, which has become the head of the corner.’ 12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!”
Let us pray together:
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before you today, lifting up our sister who is hurting from the betrayal of adultery. Lord, we know that your heart is broke with her's and you know her pain. We ask that you pour out your healing balm and surround her with your loving presence. Help her to forgive, not just her husband, but all those involved, just as you have forgiven us through Christ Jesus.
As much as it feels unfair, it is only by your power that she is able to forgive. Help her to have a desire to forgive. Give her the strength to let go of the bitterness and resentment, and replace it with your love and peace. We know your instructions for Ephesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
Lord Jesus, we pray for her husband as well. Convict his heart and bring him to repentance. Turn his heart back towards you and his wife. We pray that your will be done in their marriage, that it will be a testament to your faithfulness and redemption.
We ask all of this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
Be strong and courageous. God is with you and all things work together for good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.
We will continue to pray for you, your husband, and your marriage. Keep trusting in the Lord, and remember that He is faithful, even in the most difficult of circumstances.
