We are grieved to hear about the increasing trend of divorce and remarriage, even among professing Christians. This is not how God ordained marriage. In Malachi 2:16, God says, I hate divorce, says Yahweh, the God of Israel. Marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, as ordained by God in Matthew 19:5-6, For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall join to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.
Remarriage after divorce, while the spouse is still living, is considered adultery according to Jesus' words in Luke 16:18, Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and he who marries her who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.
We must remember that God's grace is available to all, and there is forgiveness and restoration for those who have fallen into this sin. However, true repentance involves turning away from the sin and not continuing in it. In 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, WEB, we read Don't you know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don't be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortioners, will inherit the Kingdom of God. Such were some of you, but you were washed. But you were sanctified. But you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God.
Let us pray for those who have been caught up in this trend, that they may truly repent, seek God's forgiveness, and be restored to a right relationship with Him. Let us also pray for marriages to be strengthened and for God's design for marriage to be upheld and honored in our society. We need to pray for the church to take a much stronger stand on these issues and preach the whole council of God rather than only the portions that comfort us or are culturally convenient. There seems to be a real problem when churchgoers behave just as the world does in this area.
Father, we come before You, grieved by the increasing disregard for the sanctity of marriage. We pray for those who have been divorced and remarried, that they may repent and turn back to You. We pray for marriages to be strengthened and for Your design for marriage to be honored. We ask this in Jesus' name,
