Over the centuries a great schism grew between the ruling kings and power hungry popes, eventually it got the point where disgruntled kings set up their own pope who was excomunicated by the first but the new pope excomunicated the other pope in return, eventually everyone involved became sick of the fighting and set up a coucil to determine who was the true pope, but to no avail, the great schism showed up the political nature of the papacy. In 1492 King Ferdinand of Spain established the spanish inquisition, one of the first things the inquisition did was to expel all jews and muslims out of Spain thus meaning everyone left was 'christian' and therefore under their jurisdiction. The popes by now also reigned as emperors but were corrupt an immoral, more interested in political power and wealth than spirituality, an example of this was that people could pay to be made bishops and cardinals. The 'church' at this time was so corrupt that something had to happen.
